Progesterone shots and breastfeeding

Hello I haven't posted here in ages! But I figured if anybody could help me out here you guys might be able to. I am 18 weeks pregnant with my 2nd baby. My son was born at 34.5 weeks, 5 pounds 11 ounces and 19 inches long. He was perfectly healthy, no problems nursing, he did get jaundiced and had to be in the hospital a few extra days but other than that no issues.

I have been classified as a high risk due to women having preterm labors being more likely to do it again and earlier this week went to do a visit with a high risk doctor. He told me to take weekly hydroxyprogesterone caproate shots, and to supplement with extra zinc. I haven't started the shot yet because researching made me a little nervous, with the side effects and all. Plus, my son is 2 years 4 months old and is still breastfeeding and I have no intention of weaning him. I can't seem to find any information on the effects of the shots for breastfeeding.

Has anybody here ever done the injections while breastfeeding?

Yes I did progesterone injections every 2 weeks with my 3rd baby and my 2nd nursed the entire pregnancy.

Re: Progesterone shots and breastfeeding

Glad to hear that somebody has done it I have an appointment to talk with it further about my doctor on Wednesday before I take it. I hate putting it off because I know the sooner the better but just to be safe. Did your doctor have any concerns? Was there a reason it was every 2 weeks instead of weekly? I thought the shot lasted 7 days?

Thanks so much for the answer! I am at the point where I think I am good with taking them but am just trying to be cautious. Just not sure if the benefits outweigh the risk in this case but afraid that if I don't take them I'll have a baby even earlier. lol.

My 2nd was born at 35 weeks so not super early. I have a cousin who had a 27 week preemie and she had the progesterone weekly during her 2nd pregnancy. My Midwife thought every 2 weeks would be enough for me and it was I made it 37 weeks

Re: Progesterone shots and breastfeeding

Thanks so much for the responses! I have a consultation appointment with my doctor today to talk about the shot more and whether it is worth it for me. Plus he can actually have someone experienced give me the shot since the other doctor merely sent me home wth no instructions on how to do it... and then the pharmacist helped some but not really much. I am feeling like I could do it now because my coworker's sister is an OB nurse and showed her how to do it so she showed me. But I'd rather a professional do it the first time and show me... lol
