Toy recommendations for a 1 year old

I am trying to think of the perfect birthday gift for a friend's daughter who is turning one. I like the idea of a non-toy item, like art supplies or something, but what they really need is something that can keep her safely engaged for a few minutes while mom helps the two-year-old big sister with potty training mishaps and other tasks. Minimal mess is also a huge plus. So paints are out. I thought about tissue paper art where you crumple tissue paper and stick it onto a sticky page, but at this age she'd probably put the tissue in her mouth if her mom left the room. The same would be true of most art supplies. I bought a little Crayola portable writing board where you can write with a water pen, and in theory this is a pretty good fit for what I am going for (would also be good in the car). But it is cheaply made and I've decided to return it. The family is somewhat natural and would prefer things without batteries. They'd like things that promote awareness of other cultures, nature, etc. Any ideas? Toys/activities your child loved at age 1 that they could do unsupervised for a few minutes? Thanks!

Melissa and Doug has those cardboard books that you color with a water pen. My daughter loved them around age 2, but I never tried when she was younger. Wooden blocks are always good.

Is she walking? something she can push around -- doll stroller or little grocery cart or something.

I LOVE the Fisher Price Lil' Snoopy for that age.

They usually have it at Kroger too.

Re: Toy recommendations for a 1 year old

If mom is really looking for a few minutes during which she can turn her attention away from her 1 year old, and depending upon the kind of kid she is, I'd recommend a play yard and some stacking cups.

Or stacking boxes

But the toy my son picked out at that age, and the toy he still plays with (every once in awhile) at 2.5, is the Color Roller. He found it at the store and fell in love with the pushing and the zizzing sound it makes. We have almost all wood toys here, and that is what we gravitate to for many reasons, but I think every playroom has a bit of space for a bit of battery-free plastic.

I always recommend this music set:

My son got it for his first birthday, and now our daughter uses it as well. Great quality and has held up really well. Plus noisy enough to know if they stop using it and are off to cause trouble.

2,014 items in 2014?

DS loves the Bright Baby board books. They are photos on brightly colored backgrounds. For his first birthday he also got the Melissa and Doug wooden sorting block and a Fisher Price grocery cart. The 2.5 year old I was baby sitting at the time also loved these things. He also likes this compact curly-do thing with beads.
