Must haves for smoothies

I'm having surgery on Monday. I'll be put on an all liquid diet after. I wouldn't mind replacing smoothies with a couple of my meals for a while since I could really stand to lose at least 20 pounds.
So what are your favorites for good nutritious smoothies.
If you don't use milk what do you use in place?
I'll be grocery shopping tomorrow so I'd like to get a list of what I will need to get me started.
Thanks guys!!

We make our smoothies with plain organic yogurt with juice for the base, and then whatever frozen fruit we have on hand. We usually add in spinach and some veggies as well. Sometimes I blend in oatmeal or flax seed, but unless you have a really good blender they can cause a gritty texture.

Re: Must haves for smoothies

My youngest and I can't do dairy so we use coconut milk (the kind you buy to drink not canned) but I know some people like almond milk. I've done just water but it can be a bit bland and I don't like juice, too sugary. I like pumpkin pie smoothies, chocolate, and banana strawberry. For pumpkin pie it is pumpkin (canned), a frozen banana, spoon of flax meal, protein powder, vanilla extract, a little maple syrup and pumpkin pie spice. Sometimes I add some greens like Kale (I keep them in the freezer). Then just add milk and blend, you can add ice cubes too if you didn't use frozen bananas (I keep a bunch of over ripe bananas in the freezer). Banana Strawberry is just two frozen bananas, frozen strawberries (until it looks like enough) protein powder, a handful of greens and milk then blend.

The chocolate is a little tricky but it is the one we drink almost every morning (all of the recipes actually make two large glasses because Tharen and I have smoothies for breakfast). One frozen banana, 4-5 frozen strawberries, protein powder, 3 spoonfuls of cocoa powder, maple syrup and enough Kale to fill the blender (I use a Ninja and use the largest of the pitchers) then add milk and blend. We love this, tastes like a frosty and I worry less about my son's veggie intake.

Our basic too. My favourite right now is peach/mango.

My absolute fave smoothie recipe is:

Mocha Chocolate
1 cup coffee (cold is best)
1 cup almond milk
2T of almond butter
2T cocoa powder
1tsp or 1 packet of stevia/sugar
1 scoop of chocolate protein powder

I just use a stick blender in my big smoothie cup, but you could use a blender or ninja. It's about 350 calories, so a good replacement for bfast or lunch and it really does fill you up.

My favorite is (measurements approximate) 1 cup almond milk, 1 cup frozen mango, a few handfuls of baby spinach, 2 Tablespoons Quaker oats, and a splash of vanilla extract.

All these sound so yummy!! I see some use almond butter. Where would that be located by the regular butter?
Also I was thinking of using chia seeds?? Would that work or should I just get flax? Or both?? Guess I need smoothy making for dummies 101!

Kefir, oatmeal, grapes, pineapple, banana, carrot, leafy greens (I rotate spinach and kale), raw honey, and ice. It doesn't need the ice because everything else is frozen but I find the pulp is too strong for me and tastes better if I deaden it with ice.
