30 Month old keeps undoing chest clip

My son keeps undoing the chest clip on his Nautilus. He then sticks his body out. Is there something I can do to fix this or do we need a better car seat? Thanks!

I've never tried it, but I have heard that you can reinforce an empty toilet paper roll with duct tape (to make it sturdier) and then fasten the chest clip through the middle of the toilet paper roll.

After you get them to stop unclipping it (the toilet roll is what we did) - chances are they will start pushing it down to Houdini out of the seat completely. I'll probably get flamed, but I had to sew buttons on my straps to keep baby Houdini from escaping.

How is he with buttons? You could put a button up shirt/jacket on him and leave it open, then do it up over top of the chest clip.

My DD started doing pushing down her chest clip and getting herself out of her seat right before we went on an 18 hour road trip last year. I ended up sitting in the back with her most of the time and then after our return home we would basically stop the car every time she did this. We had a lot of talks about how it's not safe, police, accidents, etc. She's still rear facing so that made it harder to see what she was doing but I think we've worked through it now (hopefully?).

He is very smart but he doesn't have many clothes with buttons so I may try that jacket idea too. Thanks Mamas!

I cannot remember if there's a reason not to, as this used to be a common post question when this board was busier, but when/if he begins sliding it down instead, you can cut a paper towel tube to size, maybe do the duct tape reinforcement, and put it between the crotch buckle and the chest clip. That way the chest clip can't slide down?

But again, I can't remember if there was a big safety reason not to, so I wouldn't do that unless a trusted knowledgeable tech (cpst) said that it should be ok. I also wouldn't take a needle and thread to the strap webbing, but I'm not saying that in a mean or inflammatory way.

I don't know if you're comfortable with using silly language, but my niece did the same thing and we used to tell her not to "unbuckle her boobies" or they would run away, and she would laugh so hard she never once undid it again. Weird solution, I know, and I'm not sure a boy would find it as funny, but it worked like a charm for us.
