Did you Exercise to prepare for Natural Birth?

We (dh &I) have been reading books on the Bradley Method, and know I should be doing pelvic tilts, kegals, perenium massage, etc... I'm just wondering if you did these kinds of exercises prior to your natural birth, or if you didn't do anything to prepare, and how you think it helped or hurt you. Thanks!

First off, we loved the Bradley Method, it really worked for me.

I did a bunch of prenatal yoga videos prior to labor. I think they really helped. I don't know if they necessarily helped during labor, but it helped relax and me not to feel like I was just a big blob and got some exercise. I do think that the pelvic rocks helped a lot too, esp when my back got sore toward the end of my pregnancy.

I walked and went swimming a lot, even during my labor. I felt very prepared, relaxed and ready for anything.

No "formal" excercises though.

Re: Did you Exercise to prepare for Natural Birth?

I took (and now teach!) prenatal yoga and I thought it helped more than any of the other classes I took (which is why I now teach!). The yoga exercises helped more with feeling good during and after the pregnancy, but the breathing exercises we learned and practiced, I actually used during my natural birth. I gave birth in "table pose" - actually I spent my whole, short labor there because of back pain - and squatting is a great way to bring the baby down. My favorite prenatal video is by Gurmukh - she's a very well known prenatal teacher and it's a good workout. I've also heard good things about Shiva Rae's video. Nothing beats a live class though, if you can find one in your area! Perineal massage is something I believe helped me, but I know a lot of midwives say it's not worth the effort - so do it if you feel good about it.

We used bradley, and I have to say that the exercises helped me more than any other part of the class. Kegels for sure as I only had to push 3 times. The pelvic rocks I think prevented me from having back pain late in the pregnancy. I definately say they are worth it!

Great info! We'll keep up the exercises then. It's always motivating to hear that people think they helped

All i can say is I wish wish wish we had done more perineal massage!! I cannot emphasize it enough!! I ended up with four tears, three requiring stitching. My DD had a HUGE noggin.

I didnt do any exercises with any of my pregnancies... I am allergic to exercise LOL

I dont believe it bothered/hurt me at all as I have been fortunate to have quick easy labors ( knocking on wood)

I really do think that the kegals did wonders. I didn't do prenatal yoga, but wish I had. I did take yoga until I was about 5 months along, then I just stuck to my routines at home. Cat-Cows helped so much with back pain!
