baby sleeping through the night--engorgement!

DS (currently 10 weeks old) started sleeping 6-8 hours straight about a month ago. Which is great! Trouble is, I still wake up in the middle of the night because my breasts become engorged--sore, leaky, sometimes to the point of soaking through pads. I keep a hand pump next to the bed and pump for a few minutes to relieve the pressure, but I'm wondering how long I can expect this to last...will it ever self-regulate or is that too much to ask?

It should self regulate

For a while I had to stop sleeping on my stomach because the pressure made it worse, but it should self regulate.

Re: baby sleeping through the night--engorgement!

Don't pump it out, as you are just telling your body to keep producing milk during the night. My EBF babies all STTN early as well, and I just had to suffer through the engorgement for about 10 days. I put ice packs on them at night to help, and changed the pads while I was at it.

Motherease makes awesome cloth nursing pads that are both contoured and waterproof--something I couldn't find anywhere else. I will leak a ton from side I'm not feeding from, and these pads will absorb all that from every feed for a full 24 hours.

yeah, I was thinking the pumping might actually be making it worse. I will definitely try ice and check out the motherease pads (I hate having to wear a bra to sleep though!).

I've had a lot of trouble with engorgement. The only thing that really helps with the pain/fullness for me is cabbage and ibuprofen. Not too much cabbage though because I've heard it will reduce milk supply (I think I read on kellymom not more than 3 times per 24h period). But I would take one dose ibuprofen and apply cabbage at night before going to bed and in the morning, voilą, all better...

Ditto to what others said. after 3 days or so your body should self regulate producing less milk during the nighttime hours. Pumping is not as powerful as a baby, so if you pumped for just a little - just to relieve the pain I believe your body would still regulate and cut back on the milk it is producing.

I am right there with you. We have a waterproof sheet and I sleep on a towel. I also use a hand towel over my chest so I can change them out multiple times in a night. Don't leave wetness on your breasts you will get a yeast infection, ask me how I know.

Sleeping on my stomach help. I would only found a little to relieve the pressure by hand expressing not a pump. It will regulate.
