Re: baby sleeping through the night--engorgement!

It should regulate within a few days. I get clogged ducts easily so putting a lot of pressure on my boobs (ie sleeping on stomach) can easily cause those ducts to get clogged if I don't pump it out. I'd try leaving a cool compress during the night.

Re: baby sleeping through the night--engorgement!

Mine did self-regulate, but it took awhile (3-4weeks if I remember correctly, but I also had major oversupply and forceful letdown)), and if my DD had a middle of the night feeding for a few days in a row I would start to leak again. I also found that even with overnight nursing pads the wetness against my breasts was irritating and would wake me up. I slept on a waterproof flannel pad(actually a crib liner-picked it up @ babies r us originally for Dd's crib but wound up being the best purchase she never used!) with a bath towel over the pad, and just slept topless-that way if/when I leaked the towel would catch it(and I could change it out if it got too wet and woke me up), but I didn't have irritating wetness against my breasts all night long. I also kept a bottle w/ a lid in a small cooler w/ an ice pack right by the bed so I could express a couple ounces(just enough so I wasn't leaking like crazy) and be able to save it and pad my stash a bit

I just waited and after a few days I would still be pretty engorged, but it wasn't painful and I wasn't leaking too much. Breast pads were enough to solve that.

I had this problem as well. I easily got mastitis because of it though. Your body should self regulate with time, but I did keep a pump next to me to relieve a bit of the pressure because when I nursed my baby and I was soooo full, he had a very hard time latching on the round boobs, and when he did, they would spray so hard that he'd choke! So, I would use a pump to relieve a bit of the pressure and fullness just before nursing.

It only lasted a couple of days for me. My milk regulated much more quickly and I rarely felt engorged with my second child.

I would pump a little until it regulates, otherwise you are at risk for mastitis.
