is it the same in all nicus?

This whole feeding thing is so frustrating. I was just wondering if it's the same everywhere? There are four phases. My baby is on phase two right now. He feeds every three hours, every other time is bottle (or breast, more on that later) alternating with the tube feed. He has to nipple at least 75% of both his bottle feeds in a shift to get his chart signed. He has to do this four shifts in a row to move on to the next phase. I can't remember what that phase entails at the moment. If he doesn't make it on one feed, he has to start all over again. Meanwhile they up his feeds every day or two. Anyway, he was born at 34w 3d, 13 days ago. Yesterday the nurse convinced me to try breastfeeding him for one of his feeds. He latched on, took a swallow, then let go. Then he did the same thing and went to sleep. THEN the nurse tells me that when they get overwhelmed, they shut down and sleep and lots of babies will do that with breastfeeding until around their due dates. Well, thanks for telling me that before we went and messed up his charting stuff and he had to start all over!! I'm sure she meant well, but still. So is all this phases and chart signing and three hour schedule the norm in the nicu at other hospitals?

Well mine was born at 30 weeks & she had to feed tube til she no longer regurgitated food back up. & when she would take a nipple on a bottle when she'd start to take that I was allowed to breast feed then give bottle when she didn't get the hang of it. But she only got 15 mins out of incubator time for other health issues & until she weighed more than the 2 pounds she was born at. So similar just done differently

Re: is it the same in all nicus?

He just took off in his feeding. He passed phase two and is doing great on phase three, which is feeding on demand, up to four hours apart, and he has to eat at least 75% of what they were feeding him. He has surpassed that. He's already eaten his 75% for the current shift and has one more feed this shift. So three more shifts and he's off to phase four, which is whatever he wants to eat and on demand, then make sure he's still gaining weight for four shifts. Then he goes home. It could be as soon as Thursday or Friday!!

Re: is it the same in all nicus?

He's scheduled to go home on Thursday. He's eating 2-3oz every 3.5-4 hours. It's amazing how he just seemed to get it all the sudden. They told me to bring his car seat in sometime today so they can do his car seat test tonight or tomorrow. That means it's really going to happen!!

It feels like I've been here forever. I was first admitted on April 21st, for two and a half days. Then I was back on the 25th and he was born on the 26th. I've been here since then with two short trips home and only seeing my other kids two times. I'm so ready to go home and be a family.

Re: is it the same in all nicus?

Hi!

Here's to going home!

My baby was born at 30 weeks exactly. We had a 6 wk NICU stay. From feeding tube directly to nursing. My NICU doctor was hesitant to let my babe breastfeed but I was determined. I was allowed to stay in NICU for breastfeeding only 48 hours before discharge. As long as my little gained weight we were discharged. We did it!

Good luck!

Re: is it the same in all nicus?

That's awesome. I hope the transition goes fairly easy for us. Right now he can barely open his mouth far enough to latch on, then loses the latch after a few swallows. The lactation consultant keeps telling me to keep trying every day and eventually, probably around his due date, he'll get it. I sure hope so. This pumping all the time is not fun.
