When baby #4 becomes Baby 4 & 5!

I was having bad lower back pain yesterday and am 8wks pregnant. OB wanted to make sure baby wasn't ectopic so off I went to ER. Found out my back pain is from a kidney stone and a UTI. Also found out I have TWO babies. Baby A measured right on at 8wks with HR 178. Baby B measured small at 6.5wks with HR of 135. Baby B will be monitored closely. Anyone with twins have one a lot smaller at the beginning? They are optimistic because the HR was good, but the size difference is a big concern.

Congrats! Stick with the monitoring, it's important. Do they share a placenta or amniotic sac? There are different risks associated with different types of twins (sharing a sac and placenta is highest risk, 2 sacs and 2 placentas is lowest). There is a decent margin of error on U/S weights, but definitely take it seriously, you might even seek the care of a perinatalogist to monitor thier growth. Good luck!

How much good can monitoring do at this point? Is there anything that can be done if something serious shows up at this stage? Sometimes OP monitoring can cause more unnecessary stress. If there is changes to care that can be made for baby B that aren't simply more monitoring methods then I would go for it but your too early in pregnancy for unnecessary stress. Make sure their course of action can actually bring about good outcomes.

OP I don't know much about twins but sometimes even with singletons there can be variations in age estimates.

Re: When baby #4 becomes Baby 4 & 5!

I responded to your post in the multiples section yesterday too but I also found out my baby for was baby 4 and 5. We didn't find that out until I was 20 weeks along though, went for my 20 week anatomy scan and there were two babies. I mentioned in the other post but my girl always measured at least 2-3 weeks behind my boy. We didn't have any early ultrasounds though so i'm not sure how they would have measured early on. She was the one that was measuring right for gestational age though, he was just always way ahead. But they were both born completely healthy. Her at 5 lbs 11 oz and him at 8 lbs 3 oz. I suspect mine were different gestational ages because of behavior from very early on. They were born at what should have been 37 weeks gestation, she always behaved more like a preemie and he is consistently 3 weeks ahead of her developmentally now, they are almost 10 weeks old.

If they share a placenta you should be monitored for twin to twin transfusion. They need to make sure both babies have adequate fluid to grow. There are many things that can be done depending on what crops up. There are differing dietary and calorie recommendations as well, and different weight gain guidelines.

Get the monitoring! There are LOTS if things that can be done depending on what the issue is if there is an issue...even for twin to twin syndrome there's a laser surgery they can do.

Yea, yea that.

So I've seen some cool shows about twins conceived on different dates.
Maybe they are that statistically rare kind of twins

Or...just blame the alien abduction!
