Baby sign language? Does it work??

Hi there!

Did any of you try to learn baby sign language with your LO?

Was it helpful? Any book, website or app recommendations??

Thx!

Re: Baby sign language? Does it work??

I taught my kids ASL signs and especially for my DS who didn't talk until 2 it was a great help! Your baby won't always be able to make the exact sign, but if you are watching you will learn their approximations and they can communicate with you. Teach them signs they need for food, drink and other things that are important to their daily life. You might even find that your child will make up their own signs. It's a wonderful experience.

I'm also interested in websites recommendations.

We did a few basic signs with both girls like "more" and "all done" and "please." Idk if we even were using the right signs but it worked for us & was helpful. I'd like to teach the baby a few. I just started with him.

Just Google American Sign Language dictionary. Many sites will offer videos of the signs being done. Works great for single words.

For purchase I loved Signing Time and Baby Signing Time.

http://www.babysignlanguage.com/dictionary/first-signs/

A great website that has a ton of helpful tips. We started when ds was around 8/9 months and it was really a lifesaver. He could communicate a lot of his needs with us.

Loved Signing Time so much that I became an ASL instructor! Signingtime.com has free resources and you can get DVD's at the library.

Re: Baby sign language? Does it work??

I used signing time to learn basic, child-friendly signs and it was great. Early communication with all my kids has saved me so much frustration over the years.

Re: Baby sign language? Does it work??

To be honest, I did a couple of signs (more, drink, food, milk and all done) and it helped tremendously with frustration. I signed it to LO when I said the word. Little one didn't sign consistently until about 10-12mths, and the sign had it's own look to it.

Learning just a few signs can really help in those months when the LO can't quite articulate verbally what they want but still are able to communicate with you.

Re: Baby sign language? Does it work??

we started signing with my 3.5 year old daughter at the Library during baby storytime and just started using it and she learned well. It made it easier to communicate with her.

\i tried with my oldest but wasn't consistent and so I think it failed.

My son at 18 months is starting to pick some up but am not sure how close they are to what he wants and only uses a little.
