For that age I like to make a small box of interesting loose parts like beads and sequins and fabric scraps. Then I give glue and a small canvas from the dollar store.
I find the creations they make are wonderful and the quiet hour it takes to make them is awesome too.

Friends gave DS craft boxes one year. They found fun easy crafts online, printed the instructions, then included everything needed in a small box. Any extra craft stuff went in a separate box. They did 3-4 crafts total for him, but it was a great idea.

Mindware, Big Brain Toys, craft stores, wherever.

Things I have bought for 5 yr old girls include artsy stuff, make your own kits (the make your own bouncy balls were a big hit), books, games (Game Wright makes a lot of cool ones), whatever toys they were in to. I usually try to come up with an idea of what I want to buy and then start looking. I also try to not limit myself by the age listed on the toy or game.

Smaller, locally owned toy stores are great places to look, as they often have lesser known, higher quality toys that are fun, but also often educational.

Why not ask either of her parents for a list?

One of our favourite gifts was a large bin with smaller buckets. Each of the smaller buckets contained crayons, markers, pencil crayons, glue, scissors (funky cutting ones) bingo dabbers, funky erasers, sticker sheets, colouring books etc

2 years later and we have refilled things, but the kids love it.
