Unhappy I think i am going to stop BF!

Ok so i took my dd to a specialist today because she has been having blood in her poo for about 3 months now (she is only 4 months old) and they said , like my PCP, that she has a milk and soy allergy. OK well i have cut out milk and soy and eggs out of my diet for about a month and a half now. The Dr. said that i must be getting it somewhere, so she gave me a list and told me to follow it very closely! OK, so now my dd has lost a pound and a half in 3 weeks. she was about 13 lbs, and now she is 11 lb7 oz, so the Dr want me to supplement w/ formula no matter what, which i have no problem with. Now here is my predicament, my dd has been in sooo much pain and i just want her to start feeling good. And i want the Dr. to find out what is going on, and i am afraid that if i keep bf that they are just going to keep saying that its the breast milk, and not do any more testing. But if i go to just the formula then they will have to do testing if she i still having pain and bloody poo. WDYT?

I don't know what to tell ya mama...

DS#1 only BF'd for 3 months, and not exclusivly...he had bad reflux, and problems gaining as birth he was 8 lbs 4 oz, and at 2 months old, he was 8 lbs 6 oz...

He was FINALLY put on a formula that worked, only to find out later that he had TONS of food allergies

I can't really tell you what to do. I have been having a lot of problems with my dd's reflux. We go to the ped GI dr next week and I am worried they are going to tell me the same thing. I don't know what I'm going to do. Formula isn't the end of the world but it is hard to give up bf when you believe in it so much.

You could always try formula, but pump just in case it's not a breast milk issue....

I am sorry mama! I guess I'd stop BF too so they can do more testing and not just say somehow she's still getting dairy and soy in the breastmilk. You can always pump and freeze to keep the supply going if you want to BF after the test results come back? I hope your DD feels better!

Re: I think i am going to stop BF!

Honestly I've known a few people in this scenario who've tried switching to formula and it hasn't worked for any of them. Their children still had bloody, mucousy stools and they were shelling out a fortune for special formula.
In the end 2 out of 3 of them relactated and ended up nursing again because the problem didn't get better. The formula just made their kids gassy and upset so they figured nursing was better.

How do you know for sure its milk & soy? For my dd it was those things and I had to cut them out, but it was also a few other things too. Did they do an allergy test of any kind or is that just the doctors assumption?

Tomatoes gave my dd blood in her stool and it took us a loooong time to figure that out. She grew out of it around 5.5 months.

I would try cutting out other things and stick it out. Chances are the formula isn't going to be much better.

to you and your baby.

Re: I think i am going to stop BF!

I agree with the above post. If your baby is having food allergies then it is better for her to be nursed for a longer period of time than to be put on formula. Sure formula isn't an AWEFUL thing, I don't personally like it but it's not posion and it MAY work. However I think it is sad that doctors would/can bully everyone into thinking that formula is better in situations like this. Many times like the above poster said it doesn't fix anything. It can also cause OTHER problems.

In MY OPINION I wouldn't stop nursing but I WOULD make them do allergy tests and other things to FIND the problem. You could also go on a BRAT diet if you are willing and see if that would help. I had issues similar to this even with reflux they continued to say she was allergic to bm which I knew was pretty much uncommon. Finally they put her on meds and she was BETTER!! If you WANT to continue nursing I would and I would make them find ways to figure out EXACTLY what the problem is and NOT just blame it on bfing.

HTH a little. I hope your dd gets better soon and also WTG for making it this long even with problems. You've done GREAT!

I second the suggestion to keep nursing her and push for a referral to an allergist. Look into probiotics, too. :hug I hope you can figure it out soon and that your LO is doing better.

Re: I think i am going to stop BF!

I'm guessing she does not spit up? She could have silent reflux. The blood could be from damage (temporary) to her espohagus. Could you try putting her on Zantac? Her esophagus could heal and maybe the bloody stools would go away.

My dd was on Zantac for a while but she outgrew the max dosage and switched to Prevacid. She was on that until I discovered probiotics, like a PP said. I highly recommend them! Good luck.
