Anyone here have a DC born with a "Sacral Dimple"?

My 2 week newborn has a sacral dimple, and we just had an ultrasound done on it, per our Ped. My DS#1 has one, but very shallow, and my husband and MIL has one too. None have had problems with it, except my MIL did have a minor cyst in hers in adulthood. The ultrasound said that an MRI was recommended because they basically didn't have good enough pics to tell (in my Ped's words). He didn't want to do the MRI, and said to wait a couple months to see how it does. There is no fluid coming from it. I am a little worried about it, as it could be a symptom of spina bifida, but he has no outward symptoms of spina bifida, says my Ped.

Anyone have any experience with this with thier own DC?

Thanks

Re: Anyone here have a child with a "Sacral Dimple"?

My DS has a sacral dimple. His ped brought it up at his first newborn appt and was watching it closely but hadnt ordered any further testing.. she had me a bit worried, but we switched him to our family Dr when we moved when he was 6 mo and she hasnt raised any concerns over it. You cant see the bottom of the dimple, but hes just fine.. hes 17 mo and into EVERYTHING.. so Im pretty sure hes just fine

Chances are everything is fine with your little one.. but I know it can be scary to think something could be wrong. I thought everything turns out for the best!

If you explain to me exactly what it is I could tell you- it sounds like what my ds has but nobody has ever shown concern about it

yep my dd has one- she had an us done at about 2-3 weeks and it was fine. the older she gets the shallower it gets- i can now see the bottom of it where before i couldn't. I wouldn't worry too much.

Re: Anyone here have a child with a "Sacral Dimple"?

It is a little indentation or "dent/dimple/divot" basically between the butt cheeks, above the rectum. Actually it can be higher up, as it is associated with the spinal cord development. I read the lower it is, the better.

No one even pointed it out to me on my DS #1, who is 18 months now.

I found a picture of one onilne...

I am trying not to worry, but I just had a friend who is a doctor tell me I should get a second opinion or go get the MRI done.

I think my DD has that! I always thought her butt crack was a bit odd.... my doctor never mentioned anything about it to me!

WEll I don't want to cause a scare with those of you who are realizing your child has one too! If the ped didn't say anything, I am sure it is fine, and I think they check for them at birth. No one ever said anything to me about my DS #1's dimple either.

Re: Anyone here have a DC born with a "Sacral Dimple"?

My DD has an MRI for hers on July 6th. I noticed it at birth, but I had no idea what it was, they've always been really shallow. Her pedi just brought them up at her 9 month appt a few months ago. She said she'd just been to a conference and they are recommending all the drs send any baby with one for an MRI no matter how minor they look. She said that the dimple *could* be a sign that the spinal cord is tethered and can cause digestive problems among a few other things later in her life. She said if you wait to fix it until the kiddo is already having problems then the surgery may not help. She said she was 99% sure that Molly's was nothing, but she'd rather have the MRI and be certain.

I hate the idea of Molly having to be under general anesthetic though, that scares me to death.

I have one, but I never knew it was anything significant! LOL I didn't even know it wasn't normal! I guess no one ever said anything about it to my mom? Interesting that it could be the cause of my gastro issues?

Re: Anyone here have a DC born with a "Sacral Dimple"?

Yup, DDs 2 and 3 both have them .. My dds look way deeper then that one in that picture you posted. Our ped. has never shown any concern over them, but with dd #3 she did say that she wants to watch it. But so far has not said anything about testing.

ETA: my SIL has one and had to have cysts remove several times. But is other wise no issue.

Also the dr has told us both times to keep it very clean. And when DD2 was potty trained we had to teach her to keep that general area clean. Same was told to SIL.
