Swimming with baby in the pool?

I know they shouldn't have sunscreen until a certain age...so I guess regardless I might need to wait, but does anyone know when a baby might be able to go into a chlorinated pool? Thanks!

Re: Swimming with baby in the pool?

I've never heard that infants can't wear sunscreen.. We just use Waterbabies on our babies and Coppertone Kids on our kids. Though now we have a chemical free sunscreen from Burt's Bees (the texture is though). Aidan was the only one born early enough to swim before the season was over (my others were in Jan and Nov) - we didn't actually take him 'swimming' but he'd float around on my dad's inner-tube with him. I don't know that we ever even undressed or slathered him with sunscreen though.

I think the youngest I'd take a baby in a pool is probably around 3-4mo. Maybe 2mo if it was the right temp outside.

My peed told me sunscreen with a MAX spf of 15 is okay to use once the baby is 2 months old. She also said don't cover the entire body..just use on exposed areas.

Re: Swimming with baby in the pool?

Six months is the age for sunscreen, but even then I try to keep it to a minimum. I always dress my littles in long board shorts and UV protectant rash guards, as well as a UV protectant hat. Then, just sunscreen for babies on the exposed bits.

I know it seems like overkill, but my dh is a lobster after 15 minutes in the sun, and the littles seem to take after him!

ETA: I take mine to the pool when they are 6-8 weeks, if it's warm enough...but I've only had one summer baby.

Re: Swimming with baby in the pool?

I've heard two schools of thought on the no sunscreen before 6mo rule. One is that babies that young really shouldn't be out in the sun anyways and they don't want to give parents a false sense of security. The other is all the chemicals in sunscreen can be hard on a babe's system.

That being said, dd1 is 20 months old and goes crazy if kept inside all day and we can only play in the shady part of the backyard so much before getting bored, kwim? So we take the kids to the wading pool at the local park once a week or so and try to avoid the middle of the afternoon when teh sun is the worst. Oh, and we use Arbonne Baby Care sunscreen.

Re: Swimming with baby in the pool?

DD was a little shy of 4 months the first time I took her in a pool. Never even gave it a second thought. AFA sunscreen, I think the standard recommendation is 6 months.
