On to the stink issue again

I've read all the posts and I've tried everything. We moved almost 2 months ago (well water now as well as new washer) and I have yet to get a washing routine that works. I've done up to 5 cold rinses once to get rid of bubbles. Right now everything stinks of ammonia as soon as he pees in it.

I've read about boiling hemp, can I boil cb inserts and mf towels? I quit using hemp thinking that was the problem back when the smell was really only in the pail (or night dipe), but it's gotten worse.

We use pockets pretty much with cb inserts wrapped in mf towels. For detergent, I have a little Sun left (can't stand the smell of it), Tide, Purex F&C (haven't used yet), All F&C (that's what I used at the old house). I did the Dawn thing a few days ago. I picked up Borax, but haven't used it. I did Simple Green & Washing Soda yesterday. My water seems pretty normal, not overly soft or hard.

I really want to get this figured out in the next few days before the baby gets here. I don't know that I can handle a 2yo and a newborn and stinky cloth.

I've heard not to use f&c detergents, b/c they apparently leave more build-up.

Re: On to the stink issue again

I've got some inserts on the stove right now and sure enough, there's bubbles.

How long do I boil? Then I dump and boil again until no bubbles right? I'll be doing this all day at this rate, I can't fit many in the pots I have LOL

So, this means I need to up the water heater when I wash dipes right, rather than adding a pot of boiling water to the wash?

Re: On to the stink issue again

i would say boil till NO bubbles!! i've never done it though--thats why i do the extra rinses.

if you up the water heater just dont forget to turn it back down!

ooo what i noticed that helped with the amniona smell was vinegar!

this round of cloth diapering i've only done it once-i did my normal wash routine THEN took ALL pockets out did a 3rd wash with just fitteds, inserts, mf towels, pf's, wipes, liners, doublers etc, then i add vinegar to the downy ball.....

Re: On to the stink issue again

I know they say not to bleach, but if you do it every once and a while it can't hurt. Bleach ONLY your inserts. Always use 1/4 cup or less (depending on # of inserts, I do 1/4 cup with 22 CB inserts). Works like a charm. I do additional rinses to rid the bleach smell. It has not reduced the performance at all. Good Luck...
