HELP-I want to convert a friend w/ a 2 yr old!!

My friend is interested in CD'ing her 2 yr old, yet is afraid it's a little late in the game. She is wanting to introduce potty training, and feels like maybe cloth will feel more like panties to her dd (without the messes for mom!! ). What should I recommend? I know nothing about trainers, etc. My dd is only 5 mnths old. Or should she go with pkts? Help me help her and turn her on to cloth!!!

Re: HELP-I want to convert a friend w/ a 2 yr old!!

I actually converted to cloth when Jonah was 2. I got started by looking for trainers but found a great deal on 5 used Fuzzi Bunz. So I bought those and we actually used them (and got into many, many other brands of diapers) for a while. Jonah took over a year to finally potty train so we used diapers (not trainers) for quite some time.

Trainers are just like diapers though, in the fact that different things work for different kiddos. They have trainers that would be considered aio, pocket, and fitted (no covers though...those are designed so they contain an accident but let the kid feel the wetness). Check out MOE, Happy Heiny and SnapEz for the major players in trainers.

Re: HELP-I want to convert a friend w/ a 2 yr old!!

I converted a friend with a 2 year old and a 4 month old. She uses only Wonder Works AIOs with doublers. At night I tried to suggest pockets, but she just adds a prefold under the doubler. I think that after using disposables for that long this system worked for her since it was by far the easiest and closest to sposies. She bought 12 mediums for the little one and 12 larges and that's all the diapers she has. Her 2 year old did PL shortly after switching although not sure if had anything to do with the cloth. I'm a bit envious of her ability to not get addicted to cute diapers and spend too much!

I would recommend trainers, too, particularly side snapping trainers like the Snap-EZ. That way they can open like a diaper to easily clean up messes, but still easily pull up and down.

The little one could still be in a diapers for a long time, but I think even cloth trainers would be a worthwhile investment even if she potty trained relatively soon.

We only started CD with the boys when Christopher was 18 months old - so we went with diapers and not trainers because he wasn't nearly as close to potty training as a 2yo would be. I would say that something super easy like an AIO will be the best bet to get her to convert. They are the most like disposables - especially for Daddy's, Grandma's and other caregivers!

We started when dd was about 20 months already started pting, we just bought some cheap HH and FB, also a few Ellas pockets for night. She mostly wore panties in the day, the hh at nap and the fb or ellas pockets overnight(could stuff w/ more). Works great and it was so nice to stop buying sposies, its never too late to start. She calls them her panty dipes!!
