Does anyone 'wash' their washing machine???

And if so, how often?

I have a friend who is due soon with her 1st. I'm trying to talk her into CDing. She is a neat freak and she insists that she would have to run an empty load of hot water with bleach after each load of dipes.

I realize that her fears might be a product of pg hormones but it has started me wondering if I should be cleaning out my machine occasionally to get rid of any poo residue??

Thanks!

Last time I had my washer/dryer serviced the appliance guy said to "wash" your machine at least once a month for regular washing but said I should do it twice a month because I cd. He showed me that in the newer washers the "garbage" collection bin is soooo tiny (I'm talking like an earring box size) and he said that gets filled up so quickly and starts causing problems.

I'll admit though, I only clean my washer once a month though

Ewww I had no idea!

How are you supposed to clean out the 'garbage' bin??

Do you just run an empty wash with detergent? Or do you use bleach?

Is there anything similar for cleaning a front loader?

I 'strip' my washing machine with bleach and vinegar every month or two, but I don't worry about cleaning it after every diaper wash. I rinse my diapers 2x after washing them and I've never noticed anything 'left over' in the washer or any odors from hidden poo to be concerned about.
