What do you do to wash wool you bought that's used?

With dipes, I'll use TTO or a little bleach to make sure I give them a good cleaning before I use them...but what can you do for wool? I know the general washing instructions for wool from the sticky, but is there something else I should do?

TIA!

If I buy wool that was washed before right before I bought it I don't do anything. By nature wool is self cleaning, and somewhat antibacterial and antifungal, which is way it doesn't need washed as often as other fibers

If you are really freaked out you can wash it in a warm Dawn bath then rinse and wash in wool wash, that strips the wool and gets it all fresh!

I'd probably use a bit of bar soap and then relanolize but I have never really bought used wool.

Re: What do you do to wash wool you bought that's used?

I bought two soakers used and used a wool wash bar, rinsed, then soaked in wool wash. I then relanolized and was good to go! I too was freaked out about buying wool used but was reassured that wool is antibacterial and just washing when it first arrived would be fine. We haven't had any problems and the wool smells just as clean as our new that I also washed & lanolized.
HTHs!

I am curious what freaks mamas out about preloved wool? I think of it the same way that I do all of my children's clothes that I buy second hand. I would not be able to afford to do wool if it wasn't for other mamas selling what they don't use anymore. Anyway, I use baby shampoo first then I wash it in wool wash w/lanolin.

Re: What do you do to wash wool you bought that's used?

I buy pre-loved wool! I have actually NEVER had new wool - but a friend of mine is knitting me 2 soakers right now. I don't get "freaked" out about stuff easily though - I love getting good deals on things - no matter how much or little money I have at the moment! Normally I will do a "test run" right after I get a soaker, to see if it needs to be lanolinized, and if it does fine, I am good to go! If it leaks, I lanolinize it. I don't worry much about germs and stuff though, especially with wool - and my (4) kids are hands down the healthiest kids I know!
