what's your way to make grilled cheese sandwiches?
I absolutely love them, and so does my lo, but I just butter them and put cheese
So I was wondering if anyone has any other ways of making them that will taste better?

I also do the butter and cheese. My DS likes to have a piece of ham in there also!

i put a thin layer of light mayo on one side and put it on the pan thats hot, add some cheese, when its time to flip, i use the spatula to lift the one side, toss the other bread that has mayo onto the pan, the flip the first side onto the rest of the sandwich, does that make sense..LOL

do you still put butter or only mayo? and do you put the mayo side up?

I start w/ homemade bread.

Then I put a thin coat of Smrt Balance on the outside of the bread.

I use Sharp Chedder and sometimes ham or turkey.

I put a slice down, the cheese, then the meat and more cheese.

Once it's time to flip I do what pp does. I pick up whats grilled, then drop the second slice down, then flip it on to the bread in the pan.

I also use a medium high heat and a dry skillet.

Here's our fave:

Layer:

Slice of Whole Wheat bread w/ butter on outside of sandwich
Slice of Cheddar
2 Slices of BBQ Basted Chicken Lunchmeat (Sara Lee Brand)
Slice of Smoked Provolone
Slice of Whole Wheat bread w/ butter on outside of sandwich

Lay the whole sandwich on the tray inside a 450' preheated toaster oven....make sure both the top and bottom burners are on.....toast for about 15-20 minutes...turning pan around once during cooking to even brown. Do not flip the sandwiches...the bottoms will be brown from the bottom heating element.

no butter just light mayonaise
the mayo side is down, as you would put your butter

this makes the bread a little crispy & toasty but not burnt, beautiful golden

We put slices of tomatoes in with the cheese! Sometimes we do open faced cheeses sandwiches with whole wheat bread, cheddar cheese and tomato slices. Just put under broiler for a few minutes.
