If you've ever made a mei tai ....

I need your help!

Is there a standard size for the main panel?

The reason I ask, is that I -- as a brand-spankin' new MT user -- bought one before dd#2 was born. I tried a couple of times over the last few months (she's barely 3 months old) to wear her in it, but it seemed too short. I just figured it was my lack of experience, but an aquaintance who's a VERY experienced baby-wearer told me the panel was FAR too short and the carrier was basically an expensive doll carrier. DD#1 has absconded (again) with my tape measure, but the panel on my MT is approximately 14"W x 16"H. Does that sound right?

Thanks!

That does sound pretty small. I made one a few weeks ago and my main panel was 16w x 18h before sewing (and my seams didn't take up much room, way less than 1/2 inch on each side.

Nothing is standard in a mei tai, really. If I were you, I'd measure my kiddo and make the panel whatever size you think would fit her best--you have the one that is too small. Pay attention to how it fits her and go from there. Since she's only 3 months, maybe make it on the more slender size or countour it along the sides so she can grow into it some.

I wear my DD in one that is 14W & 18H and she is 22 months old & 25 lbs

I do have a larger bodied one that I also use, but the smaller one works just as well for us.

ETA: when I use the smaller one I just make sure to wiggle her down into the body well.

What I meant was body size, since that was what she was asking about. They vary so widely. You gave her a great site.

Yeah the width on it is fine but the height on it is unwearable- really it is! I was shocked that a ds mama sold it too her The straps are really icky too- wrong fabric...

Wow I guess mine are on the larger side...its 22 inches by 16 inches or so (not taking into account seams)....we've got a curved top on ours for a fold-down flap, so that makes a bit of a difference, but it sounds like yours is pretty short!! I'm sorry!!

Oh, I wasn't worried about your comment. You made a good point that needed to be made. Keep it up!
