Re: s/o-Were you allowed to eat & drink during labour?

No just water, juice, or broth. They prefered ice chips. After the birth I was starving and made someone go get me a dinner.

Nope...hospital policy was clear liquids only. I'm using a different hospital this time and their policy is also clear liquids but I put in my birth plan that I want to be allowed to eat and drink whatever I'm comfortable with and my MW signed off on it so here's hoping...

Re: s/o-Were you allowed to eat & drink during labour?

I wasnt "allowed" food but MIL snuck me in some and it sucked towards the end of my labor when contractions were really coming fast and hard with no break in between them I was throwing up everything I had eaten (I dont even remember what it was).

I was allowed water, juice, and I got a nurse to give me a popscicle! I didnt even want food though. Food was the furthest thing from my mind, and I was definitley not "starving" at all!

I wont eat anything with my next deliveries - that was just awful!

Nope, I wasn't allowed anything. Only Ice chips...like that even begins to quench your thirst. Just thinking about this makes me mad. It's my body and if I want a drink of water I should be able to get a drink!

I did throw up with my first DD...but I attribute that to drinking 2 bottles of castor oil after eating Taco Bell instead of just eating alone. And that was HOURS after I had eaten. With DD2 I ate right before they induced me and I didn't even feel nauseas.

With this baby...I WILL make sure my belly is full/satisfied before I get in the car to go to the hospital. I will also sneak in a bottle of water. It's absurd that I can't drink and I refuse to follow that rule!

I dont get the no drinking thing???

I can kinda understand the no food thing - if you end up with a c-sec. and you go under and have a reaction to it you could throw up and basically drown in your own vomit if the vomit doesnt come all the way up they would never know you're vomiting. Ya know?

But, I think water should definitley be allowed.

Re: s/o-Were you allowed to eat & drink during labour?

with my first two ds's i was allowed as much water, juice, clear soda's and popscicles as i wanted..no food though. i'm delivering at a different hospital this time though so i don't know what their rule of thumb is...i do know that if i'm thirsty and i want any of the above i will have it. i'll have to talk to my dr about this...i just assumed you were allowed clear liquids during labor everywhere?

Re: s/o-Were you allowed to eat & drink during labour?

With all of my deliveries they said ice chips only! This didn't bother me too much, I didn't really feel hungry. But i did ask for a sierra mist with my last 2 and they gave it to me. I would also eat LOTS of the ice chips and even let them melt and drink them. Their reason was to prevent vomiting and if there needed to be an emergenct c-section. I did take in creme savers, gum, mints, and crackers. I ate a couple but really did not have much of an appetite.

No food or drink restrictions at all in our hospital. They got me a full breakfast when I arrived. I never ate lunch...had no interest at all, had plenty to drink, they wanted me well hydrated, then got me my dinner after he was born at 4:50pm.

Re: s/o-Were you allowed to eat & drink during labour?

1st baby: hospital birth. was an emergency c-section, so no.

2nd baby: home birth. Labor lasted 54 hours and I ate whatever I wanted, including pizza and pepsi. Big mistake...I became constipated and actually asked for an enema. Overall, I am glad I was able to eat because I needed the energy.

Next time I am only eating fruits and veggies and water/clear liquids. I think the nurishment is important but I need easily digestible foods.

If it were a hospital birth, I would just hide it because I think the rule is silly.
