Ohh, we started talking about this again, LOL. When my water broke with my son I had just eaten some Oreos (I think, LOL) so I wasn't hungry. Then I got in there and we sat around until 3 am (don't usually eat in the middle of the night so I wasn't eating, but I drank water and coke) and then I was induced. After the pitocin REALLY kicked in I couldn't ask for anything to save my life, LOL!! DH kept getting me to sip water out of a cup, and the nurse never said anything about it so I guess it was OK, LOL. I never wanted food, nor even thought about it, LOL. I did want some Coke after I delivered, though - pretty bad, LOL.

Re: s/o-Were you allowed to eat & drink during labour?

I was in labor with DS for three days and all I had to eat were ice chips. By the time I started pushing I was so weak they had to break out the forceps. DD was a c-section so I only had to starve for 12 hours before having her.

I was only allowed ice chips. I didn't care about the food, but I would've like a glass of water. The ice chips kept us both pretty occupied though. Next time I'll drink if I'm thirsty!

Re: s/o-Were you allowed to eat & drink during labour?

That's awful that so many of you mamas weren't allowed to eat or drink. Why has childbirth become so medical? It's like being prepped for a major organ transplant! How are you suppose to have the energy to give birth with such low blood sugar! Oh wait, you're not suppose to give birth! You're suppose to schedule a c section for no reason, or go to the hospital w/o any signs of labor except a "due date". Then start having synthetic hormones pumped into your body and wind up being rushed in for an emergency c-section because your baby is showing signs of distress.
Silly me, I thought labor was a natural thing!
Sorry, I'm very opinionated about this topic

Re: s/o-Were you allowed to eat & drink during labour?

I was not allowed with #1 and I was BEGGING for some food. I was in labor for 36 hours with only ice chips.
I don't remember #2.
#3 was a whole 'nother story. I had a waterbirth in a freestanding birthcenter. You were "made" to eat and drink(there is no IV). I had alot of gatorade, the midwife made me hot tea, I could eat whatever(I packed lots of dry cereal, fruit, granola bars...) And right after the birth dh went and got everyone Taco Bell.

So, guess what I'm doing for #4? lol

Re: s/o-Were you allowed to eat & drink during labour?

I had a free standing birth center birth as well and my midwife made sure my Gatorade glass was full at all times and told us to help ourselves in the kitchen. I had a 39 hour labor, spent the first 22 or so at home, then went to the birth center, and we made sure to pack plenty of snacks to take with us.

Our midwife said the no food/drink rule is the dumbest thing she's ever heard. If you are shot and come into the ER they don't say "Oh, you've had food in the last 12 hours...we can't operate!" Bah!

If you are having a hospital birth, my two pieces of advice would be 1) wait as long as possible before going, because the less time you are there, the less stuff they can do to you and 2) make sure you and your midwife/ob/head nurse go over your birth plan ahead of time. They can't MAKE you do anything and if you bring your own food and drink, they aren't going to physically take it away from you. Eat if you wanna! Labor is hard work!

Re: s/o-Were you allowed to eat & drink during labour?

How's this for you... I was in the hospital at 4 in the morning on April 4th with a terrible flu. The only thing I had to eat all day was a thing of jello.

April 5th, I was still feeling kinda queezy, so I had a thing of jello for breakfast. My protein count came back that morning and my doctor called and asked that I come in to be induced. I was not allowed to have ANYTHING but ice chips. This is after 2 days of not eating! Not only that, but because I had magnesium sulfate, I wasn't allowed to eat until 6 hours after Xander was born. So I went from around 9 at night on April 3rd until 11 at night on April 5th with nothing but 2 servings of jello and some ice chips. I could've killed someone.

Re: s/o-Were you allowed to eat & drink during labour?

I wasn't allowed I thought I was going to strave I was in labor for 25 hours natural no meds then at 30 hours after laboring and straving they gave me a spinal tap and did a c-section. They said if I did good after my c-section then I could eat so after I got out of recovery I walked and showed them I could do everything so I finally got to eat I thought they were going to starve me to death I know better next time I will eat my butt off before I go to the hospital or birthing center which ever it be.

Re: s/o-Were you allowed to eat & drink during labour?

I was induced with dd#2 because my amniotic fluid was basically gone..... they did the cervidal (sp?) overnight and before they administered pitocin, they let me eat a huge breakfast. When it came time to push, I pushed her out in 2 tries. With dd#1, I was not allowed to eat and I had no energy reserves and pushed for nearly 3 hours. I was exhausted........
