Growing Pains Help Needed!

My nephew is 8 yo and is having terrible growing pains in his sleep. I know that I used to get them when I was little, too, and they always hurt so very badly that I would wake from them. Has anyone found anything that helps? Any advice would be very helpful! TIA!

My son was getting them every night it was awful!

What helped us was a banana before bed & an amber necklace! He hasnt had any since! I know 3-5yrs & 8-12yrs (or something like that) are when most kids get them.

Also hot/cold packs, rubbing legs, tylenol!

I used to get them bad when I was around that age! My mom would give me a glass of milk. I don't know if it made me sleepy or what, but it helped a lot.

Have you tried Hyland's Calms Forte 4 Kids? We use that for DD when she is overtired or having restless nights & night terrors. It has worked WONDERS!!! I read on the label that it's good for growing pains as well.

Re: Growing Pains Help Needed!

I second the banana thing. I suffered horribly from these pains, and now have passed it onto my son (so lucky). So I second the banana thing, the rubbing of the calves, and also it has helped us to prop legs up on a pillow--quite firm and place it just below the knees... It does pass--eventually!

I agree with the banana and the milk. Leg cramping can be caused from low amounts of potassium and calcium in the body. I still have this problem and I am in my 40's! Rubbing the legs helps, but getting the nutrients balanced helps even more. I now take Natura Bio leg cramp remedy whenever my legs ache....this is a homeopathic tablet and it works wonders! Pains stop almost instantly. Good luck...HTH

My 4 1/2 y.o. gets them also. I have been told to up his potassium intake, too. He asks me to rub his legs or feet fairly often, in fact today he said "momma I am doing a lot of growing, I need you to rub my leg." Poor little guy!

Re: Growing Pains Help Needed!

DD has leg pains fairly frequently but hers are not growing pains, exactly -- we aren't sure what they are and she's had them since about 12 mo. and she's 6 yrs now -- docs, scans/x-rays, and lab work have ruled out the scary stuff (CP, MS, MD, JRA, etc.) -- right now, we think its just "poorly formed ankles/joints" even though they look normal and she has a normal gait. She seems to have "outgrown" most of it but when she does a lot of high impact things, they occasionally return. When she has them one or more of the following:

acetaminophen
heating pads
leg rubbing
and what we call "warm pot" -- where I get my biggest stock pot and fill it with really warm, almost hot, water and let her soak.

I think a warm/hot bath would do the same thing but usually hers happen in the middle of the night and bath isn't really convenient. Plus, I think "warm pot" works psychologically, too
