Anyone with NICU/Preemie experience?

My best friend's sister's water just broke at 29 weeks. She is in the hospital, and they think she'll have the baby within a few days, 2 weeks at best. I want to make something for the baby but I don't know what she can have in the NICU. I assume she'll have a feeding tube at first... can she wear those baby gowns? Lap tees? Or would I be better off making a blanket? Hat and booties? Help!!! TIA

When my DD was in the NICU she just wore a diaper and a hat. I think you are better off just making a hat and booties. The baby will have so many cords and stuff around it that it's such a hassle to try and put a gown on. That's my opinion anyway.

Same here, dipe and hat. I loved her little hats. They are the only thing I kept from the NICU experience.

Ditto... dipe, hat, socks and mittens. You can also get those kimono tees once she's done with the heat lamp.

I'll post more later...

Re: Anyone with NICU/Preemie experience?

My little guys had a hat, diaper, and mittens. They kept scratching their faces so the mittens helped a lot.

Re: Anyone with NICU/Preemie experience?

I put my boys in snap front footless sleepers. The only issue with that was that the NICU through them in the laundry and we never saw them again. I would make a hat or blanket..something that they don't have to worry about changing. With the booties, they sometimes have the O2 sensor on the bottom of their feet so they might not even use them.

Re: Anyone with NICU/Preemie experience?

Ds was in the NICU for 9days (34week baby) and at 1st with all the tubes he could only have a diaper on.

My friends baby born at 30weeks was in the NICU for 10 or 11 weeks and only had a diaper for quit some time

Heres what I have seen though
blankets to lay on top of the bed for baby
toys to sit on the outside of it

I really would not do clothing unless they don't care if its gets lost..I know when ds was in there the nurses told us that when the babies do get to wear stuff that it usually gets threw in with the hospitals clothings/blankets,etc that they have and theres no guarantee that you'll get it back

Re: Anyone with NICU/Preemie experience?

My DD was in the NICU (she was a 35 weeker) and as other mamas have stated, hat and diapers were all she wore. However, I was able to take her out periodically to nurse and they were very concerned about her keeping warm...so maybe a nice blanket. She'll probably be wrapped in hospital receiving blankets but something nice and snuggly to make mama feel better might be nice. That's about it though.

a blanket would be nica and less likely to be lost than a hat or booties
