A Beka opinions

Just wanted to get some opinions on different curriculum for a second grader. What does everyone think of A Beka?

it's a good program as long as you're willing to pick and choose what works for you. unless they've changed the curriculum since I graduated HS, it's mostly written for a classroom so it's really hard to do it all when you're just the only kid (group activities, etc.) otherwise it's a great program.

Is your child reading already? If she is, I posted some opinions here.

If you like this kind of approach then A Beka is great! I don't know if the previous poster used the actual homeschool materials for them or if their parent used the christian school version. My daughter was an only child up till last year (she was 7) and we found nothing hard about it as far as her being the only one. Very rarely it asked for statistics for the people in her classroom and she just used her family as the "classroom".

I am currently jumping more into a Charlotte Mason approach this year and we are really enjoying it. But before now I'm glad we had A Beka. Just to kind of "show me the ropes". They have a GREAT phonics program.

My DD went to a Southern Baptist Elementary School that used this curriculum. We loved it. She really did well with it. She is now in public, but I think it built a great foundation for her. She was reading and writing in cursive the first few months of Kinder.

Re: A Beka opinions

I just wanted to chime in and say that although I am not a hs mama (yet!) I am a hs grad and I used A Beka from 4-12 grades and I loved, loved it!!!! It is a little more strict bc it's so structured but it really worked for me! I'm planning on using it with my kids when the time comes! HTH
