Flax Seed Oil

Does anyone know for sure if flax seed oil in the liquid form must be refrigerated even before it's opened? I've always purchased mine in the refrigerated section at the store, but I was just wondering if it is a necessity. TIA!

Most of them do not need refrigeration. It may be a particular brand that requires it. All have always purchased mine in the vitamin, unrefrigerated, section.

I always keep my bottles of the oil in the fridge since that's where it came from when I bought it. It must be kept refridgerated after it's opened too.

Flax seed oil can go rancid pretty easily too, and is only good for 3 months after it has been opened. If it has gone bad it smells kinda funky!

Before opening it can be shelved and after opening always refridgerate it. OH, don't cook with it either

It's also wonderful for woman's sexual health, (meaning sexual organs ) and hormones.

It's really important for your kids too. It can be absorbed through the skin for babies... and then I throw it in Bailey's cereal or soup or as a dressing on salad

If you just sprinkle flax seeds on things will it work the same? or is the oil better?

The ground seeds are a great source of fibre, lignans and veg protein (on salads, in baking, oatmeal), but you have to eat a buttload to get the oil benefits out of the seeds. The oil can be mixed half/half with butter to use as a butter spread, poured onto veggies (like you would with butter or oil), in salad dressings.

The ground seeds are a bit better than the whole (increased surface area=increased access to fatty acids and lignans), but will cost a little more. Some people just buy a cheap coffee grinder to do their own, but if you are a "purist", you won't like the fact that the grinder will give off some heat, so the seeds aren't cold milled.

Oil or seeds, keep 'em in the fridge in a dark container.

I used to be rep for a line of organic flax oil products, I live in saskatchewan canada (Canada's largest grain hubs) and I worked at the Sask wheat pool testing grain hence my info and
