What to expect with a broken elbow?

DD broke her elbow yesterday at camp. She is in a soft cast now and will go see the ortho on Tuesday for more xrays and her hard cast. She is almost 5. Any suggestions/experiences/ideas/tips to share? Thanks!

Ugh! You’re poor DD!!!
My DH broke his elbow. He feel off his bike (bike cycle!). He was in 2 hard casts, a whole arm and then arm cast, then a brace. He had to have physical therapy too. He broke it in mid Nov and wasn’t healed and done with PT till Feb. Hopefuly she'll heal faster than my DH did since she's only 5yo and he was 26.

Re: What to expect with a broken elbow?

My mom broke her elbow a few years ago. I had to take care of her. She couldn't even lift her arm up. I can't remember if she got a hard cast or not, I am thinking that she didn't because it was a Type 1 Radial Head Fracture. Biggest tip, button up shirts will be your friend. I had to cut the shirt she was wearing the day she broke it because it was impossible to get it off otherwise. Try to keep her busy with things so she doesn't use that arm and let it rest and heal. I hope she feels better soon!

Re: What to expect with a broken elbow?

My ds broke his elbow last year just three days before his fifth birthday. He broke it in two places. He had a soft cast on for the first few days, only because the doctors we saw were terrified to do anything to it. They wanted to make sure we saw a pediatric bone specialist. When we finally saw the ped doc he put him in a hard cast for 6 weeks. It turned out he needed to be in the cast for 8 weeks, but it was totally fine. He went through it like a champ and hasn't had any problems since. Best of luck to your dd!

Re: What to expect with a broken elbow?

DD broke it with only 20 days until her 5th birthday lol. Who knew turning 5 could be so dangerous??

Same deal, soft cast, going to the Dr. today. They had trouble seeing the fracture on xray, but they said it's because they think it is on the radial head and the swelling in her joint was impeding their views. Hopefully today things have settled down a little so they can see more.

Now I am wondering, why oh why did I buy that darn bounce house for her party?
