Can someone please tell me the deal with soy for infants?

I vaguely remember reading on here something about how soy isn't good for infants (because of the estrogen hormones or something? )

I've searched the forums and can not find anything on Soy... weird because I recall a post about it a few months ago.

I have a 10month old DS who is starting to now eat finger foods. We are still mostly breastfed. I am a vegetarian so foods like veggie burgers and tofu are always avaialable. Are these bad to give him? I've tried looking on the web but everything is so conflicting.

And if not soy, what would I feed a veg baby? I've fed him some of the "Quorn" products, not soy but myoprotien from mushrooms but I'm sure someone will tell me that is bad for infants too...

I'm really at a loss...

Thanks for your help!
Michelle

All I remember about soy is that it is one of the most common food allergies. I think that is why it isn't recommended. I know its in the top six for food allergies.

Would this include soy formulas? Sorry to just but in -- I put my daughter on Enfamil Soy since birth and never heard of anything bad about giving her soy but if there is something out there stating otherwise I would definately like to know.

Yes I've heard about the steroids as well. My herbalist said to never give kids soy. For one reason, because it can be as bad for their system (allergy wise) as milk or it can cause more allergy problems.

This is the only article I have saved in my favorites since I got a new computer, but there are loads of sites out there that will tell you the deal.

My son is lactose intolerant and does soy milk, cheese, and yogurt. Is that bad for him at 16 months? Sheesh. I never worry about stuff like this, but he has a LOT of soy stuff a day. Probably 2-3 sippy cups of milk, 1 yogurt, and 1 slice of cheese per day. Sometimes less.

We don't vaccinate, we kept our sons intact, we use cloth diapers, we co-sleep, we extended RF, we breastfeed, but we watch too much tv and I totally dig plastic! Everyone has their issues, lol.

Re: Can someone please tell me the deal with soy for infants?

Our doc told us that soy isn't "bad", but that he definitely avoids giving it to his kids. He talked about how there are lots of studies being done to prove different theories and said that soy does have estrogen in it, probably a small amount. He said he really didn't want to be giving his boys estrogen.

My ds doesn't tolerate milk and we give him Rice Milk, which he loves. We are trying Goats Milk with him right now. I personally just avoid anything with him that's all soy...like soy milk, yogurt, cheese, burgers, etc. He is going to get some soy, but I try to avoid major overload.

I believe Soy stunts a baby's physical development/growth and unless directed by a physician shouldn't be given to infants.

*Soy formulas sold for infants are rich in trypsin-inhibitors which can stunt growth.

I really don't know but there used to be a sticky somewhere in the kitchen forum that had a few great web sites for feeding the little ones veg and vegan meals. Since I am neither and DD refused for so long to eat most proteins I used many of these meals and she loved it. I know you have to have the right balance of foods and I did clear it with her ped as well, but I can't remember the site, just know I got it off of here.
