also, lots of angel food takes FS too, it is a great way to make them stretch.

When I had to go on maternity leave for DD I got FS because without me working there was no income and I used Angel Food to make 2 months of FS stretch 5 months. Thankfully once the $$$ is on the card it rolls over to the next month so the more you save, the longer you can make it last, even when you no longer qualify.

I sure hope it works out for you!
Question: With food stamps, do you get x amount of money for whatever you want to buy or is it allocated like WIC (2 gallons of milk, 1 box of cereal- certain brands only, etc)? Ive always wondered. Thanks
I hope they will be able to help you out!

Food stamps you get a certain amount of money based on your income...So for us we get 75.00 a month...Not much but we use it to get meats to put in our freezer...

Re: food stamps-aka-what i am thankful for

Oh wow! Every little bit helps, right?
I think here you get something called an EBT card, and you swipe it on the debit/credit card machine. I think its a nice option for families who are working thier butts off and still cant make it. I know some families are too proud/embaressed to do it, and then their kids starve. With these cards I would think it would take away from that embaressment that some feel.
Heck, I would take it in a heartbeat LOL! We fortunatly/unfortuantly depending on how you look at it, dont qualify...
Like I said, every little bit helps...
Thanks for explaining it to me

Re: food stamps-aka-what i am thankful for

I know how you feel. We were on food stamps for a couple of years, then DH got a really good job when I was pregnant with baby #3 and we got off them. Four months later he was laid off. We got by for a month before we finally broke down and signed up again. Since we had no income we signed up for expidited food stamps, but apparently they didn't notice that I had checked the box because it took four weeks! One day all I had to eat was a can of peaches. We didn't even have gas money to go beg at a food pantry, and we didn't have a phone. I'd had several ultrasounds because my sugar was a little high and I had had gestational diabetes in the past. They guessed that DS would weigh between 8 and 9 LBS. DH went back to work two weeks before DS was born, and we FINALLY got food stamps 1 week before the birth. Poor little Tommy weighed 6lbs 12oz. My other two DC both weighed 8lbs 8oz. It's strange, though. DC had to live off of hot dogs and mac and cheese and nothing else, but they got fat during the proccess. They practically starved but gained weight. That's junk food for you! Good luck to you!

Re: food stamps-aka-what i am thankful for

Maybe I'm just reading your whole post and looking at a bigger picture here?

You indicate that you are living only on 20 dollars a week for food - that is 80 dollars a month, but you are bringing in 1400 a month. So, 1320 is going to something else?

I guess that if your husband is "odd jobbing" it, maybe thats where the focus should be? I know I waited tables and made a ton. You can deliver pizzas. Heck, wait tables during the day, deliver pizzas at night? Two jobs to get your out of your situation. Its like Dave Ramsey (the financial specialist) said, if you are working two jobs you are too tired to be stressed out about money haha!

You have the internet, so it does looklike you have SOME disposable income? Maybe? Internet costs about 20 dollars a month. I"d get rid of it and use that money for food?

You say you are behind on big bills - does that mean credit cards? In your siutaiton they can be really harmful. I would seriously suggest talking to some sort of credit counselor to help you out. 80 dollars a month for groceries with a husband who is barely working is not going to do it for 3 children! You have to think about working two jobs, etc. Or getting an online job, etc. Something you can do.

I know that if your husband is in good health, he can work two jobs until you guys get on your feet. in the meantime good luck, and God Bless!

Re: food stamps-aka-what i am thankful for

Hmm...I think she probably knows that $80 a month for food with 3 kids isn't going to work. Thats why they are applying for foodstamps. I totally understand wanting to give advice and help her "out of the situation" but really getting foodstamps for the short term isn't that big of a deal. Perhaps her husband is looking for full time work and cannot find it.

I'm not sure working 2 jobs with 3 kids is really that feasible. I know I couldn't do it and we have 4 kids.

I dunno, I look "at the bigger picture" and see a family working and struggling right now and want a little help. nothing wrong with that.

To the OP I sincerely hope that things turn around for you. I hope that your food stamps come through quickly and that your situation improves before you know it. We know what its like to scrimp and work hard with our paychecks.

To the pp who has all the answers - wow. Its just rude and insensitive. We have internet and we're struggling to pay bills - but our internet isn't one of our bills. Its on my in laws account. So you don't know her whole situation and quite frankly being in a similar situation without the internet to converse with other mama's I'd be in a serious depth of depression right now - so to me even if we were paying the bill 20 a month is not a bad price to pay for some sanity.

I hope you application gets processed soon and you guys are approved. I'm not sure if you mailed your paperwork back yet or not, but if it's possible. I would suggest taking it in and leaving it at the front desk, here they give you a receipt as proof of what you left. Also call he person who is doing your paperwork and check the status of your application often. GL mama.
