How To: Dye Using Dylon in Sink
This picture tutorial is based on the instructions on the back of the Dylon packet. Changes have been noted in RED.
Begin with Dylon dye and salt ![]() You want your items to be damp (I ran them through a prewash cycle) ![]() Add Dylon dye to 4 cups WARM water ![]() Stir until all of the dye powder is dissolved ![]() Run WARM water into the sink or another container (enough to cover the items you are dyeing) ![]() Add 4 tablespoons salt and stir to dissolve ![]() Add diluted dye and stir ![]() Add whatever you are dyeing (1/2-lb per packet of dye) ![]() Keep stirring it for 15 minutes ![]() Then, you can let it sit for an additional 45 minutes ![]() Keep up with how long you need to leave them in for! ![]() Every once in a while, give it a whirl (I found it's easiest to just do it with your hands, but remember to wear rubber gloves) ![]() When the hour is done, drain the sink. Or take your items out and dye more items a lighter shade of that same color. ![]() Rinse with COLD water until the water runs clear ![]() I found that the easiest way to do this is to keep putting cold water into the sink, swish the items around and wring it out. It only took me 3 times to get clear water. Or you can pop them in the washer and run them through a few rinse cycles until the water is clear. ![]() Then, run them through a wash cycle on hot with detergent ![]() Dry away from heat or direct sunlight. Nah ... dry them in the dryer. I recommend it, because they're much softer and fluffier from the dryer. I'm still waiting for mine to dry, so I'll post final pictures tomorrow.

Re: How To: Dye Using Dylon in Sink
I wish I had stainless steel sinks! I have to use a big bowl and can only do one color at a time

Re: How To: Dye Using Dylon in Sink
Oh! Good idea! And I totally just used my hands, sans gloves, the other day. My nails are STILL green. My 4 yo got all excited (when my hands were still ALL green) and told me I could be the wicked witch. I told him maybe I really was, but he didn't find that near as funny as I did.

your last pic isn't showing.
that looks really easy, your sink is like mine so i know i can do this! how many prefolds per color pack? or does it matter as long as all are submerged and there not packed tightly?

Looks great!
We have white sinks so we used bus tubs (from DH's restaurant). Good job! |

Re: How To: Dye Using Dylon in Sink
The package says 1/2-lb per packet, so I just did 2 prefolds, which weighed a little over 9oz on my scale. I wanted vibrant colors, and I bought every color of Dylon they had, so I want to be able to dye them all. I'm going to add some tees and socks into the next batch, so I'll probably do 2 prefolds, a shirt, and a pair of socks.

Re: How To: Dye Using Dylon in Sink
You can also take the prefolds out and use the remaining dye in the sink to dye two more prefolds a lighter shade. I did that with mine.
