Anyone else feel "Suffocated" (trouble breathing) during labor?

Once I get to the active/transition phase of labor, I have trouble breathing. Is there anything I can do about this? It has gotten worse with each one. Last time I just felt so suffocated with each contraction! It did not help that we had a cheap "fishy pool" that I was birthing in, since the new plastic smell drives me nuts! So this time I'm not planning on doing a water birth. BTW, I had the last one at home, and this one will be at home too. But even in the hospital with babys 1,2,&3, I sorta remember this too.

I do seem to have some mild asthma like symptoms, even though I've never had asthma before this. I'd say in the last couple of years I've noticed it. I think it's correlated with me being really run down. That's when it seems to flare up.

Has anyone else experienced this? Should I plan on using oxygen during transition? My homebirth midwife carries it, so I could talk to her about that. Are there any medicines, whether natural or not, that would help? Thanks!

Re: Anyone else feel "Suffocated" (trouble breathing) during labor?

I have only given birth to one child, but YES I remember this totally! I remember saying "I can't breath, I can't breath" and it was like no one heard me. Finally, I screamed (the only actual loudness during my labor and delivery) "I need oxygen" Then one of the nurses proceeded to tell me I didn't. I am not a rude person in general, but at that point I got a little irritated with nurses and drs. (they had sent me home two times with my water ruptured--so I wasn't all impressed with any of them!)... I got my oxygen though and everything went pretty quickly.

Have you ever tried hypbirth or imagery birthing? That may help you with your transition breathing problems.

Re: Anyone else feel "Suffocated" (trouble breathing) during labor?

I have had to have oxygen with two of my births. I'm not sure why buy I was always told by my nurse that my oxygen levels were low. It drives me nuts because I am claustraphobic (sp?) and I HATE having that mask thing on, but if it helps me or the baby, so be it!

Thanks for the suggestion. I will talk to my MW about that.

This is what I *should* have done last time, lol! But silly me, I sorta lock up in labor and lost my ability to communicate. That is something I am going to work on this time.

Sorry you had such a rought time getting what you needed at that hospital. Have you considered a home birth next time?
