Re: Some of the cheapest toys aren't toys at all...
when I was a kid I could entertain myself for hours with pots and spoons or big boxes. My uncle had an appliance store so I was always getting awesome boxes!
My DH's Aunt let her grandson play with this little box of stuff that really ought to have been labeled "things babies should not play with". It had bolts and nuts and bits of wire and stuff like that. It used to terrify me but he never put any of it in his mouth ...go figure

DH and I were talking about this the other day...our favorite "toys" growing up were huge cardboard boxes. They can be forts, space ships, race cars, and anything else you can imagine!
I've found this to be the case with cats as well. You can buy my boys the most expensive toy mice, and they will always go back to bottle caps, ponytail holders, and fingers.

Re: Some of the cheapest toys aren't toys at all...
That is so true - people were surprised at all of the "must have" baby stuff that we did not want/need/buy including toys. We've been fine without! Not only are some of the best toys not toys, but one or two things can keep little ones entertained for a long time. And frankly, mom, dad, and sibs are the best toys in the world!

Re: Some of the cheapest toys aren't toys at all...
DS loves my measuring cups (the plastic ones) and spoons. He also digs the cookie sheets but I have to stop that when he started standing on them and fell. He has access to our plastics cabinet and I've given up hope of ever having it organized again. I spent 20 minutes the other night pulling his actual toys out where he hid them. I'm thinking of buying a battery powered light to hang in there since he spends so much time in there! We don't buy alot of toys but take what we're given.
He also likes to play with packets of stuff....oatmeal, pastas, etc. I try to let him as long as it's only the paper packages. He also loves some of DHs irrigation supplies for work...just so long as they are XL in size and aren't a choaking hazard.

That's what I found with my cat.
Friends are always surprised by how few "toys" DS has. He'd much rather "cook" his noodles in a pot for hours... He loves to stack cans, fold laundry, clean the floor... Oh, and other people's shoes. That is one of his favorite games. He wears other people's shoes and just giggles.
