HE Washer and stinky amonia smell

Please help me! I have a HE washer and can't find a detergent that works really well with our dipes. I've tried HE Tide free and clear, HE purex and Dawn. I'm allergic to Tide so I really don't want to buy the HE regular Tide, but will if it's the only choice. So, the problem... my son't dipes stink so much when I take them off of him. He is a heavy wetter and gets changed often, but it doesn't seem to help. The dipes don't stink after they're washed, only after he pees in them. I mainly use prefolds, but every type of dipe we have stinks after he pees. He's only begun eating solids. He's still mainly B'fed. I don't know what else to do. Please help me figure this out. Oh, and I extra, extra rinse to make sure the suds are out. No bleach. I've tried hot and cold water and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Thanks!!

I would try a very small amount of original dawn liquid dish soap (I am talking 2 teaspoons). And then an extra hot wash w/o any soap to clear out the residue.

alot of people are having luck with the tide HE. I would make sure you are using enough detergent. SOmetimes stink is caused by using too little. I am still in the process of perfecting my routine. Good luck!

If you have ammonia stink, it's likely bacteria left in the diapers. Bac Out works really well (so I've read, we cant get it up here in Canada). Also, do you use vinegar and have hard water? That could be causing stinkies too. I know some mamas have put a capful of bleach in the wash too, to kill the bacteria and that's helped get rid of the ammonia smell.

Re: HE Washer and stinky amonia smell

Yeah, I definitely don't want my dipes to have gross bac growing!! I'll have to try using more detergent. I've tried dawn already and though they come out of the wash smelling wonderful, they still stink after he uses them. It's seriously burning a whole in my nose. It's bad! I don't want that on my sweet baby!! If the extra detergent doesn't help I'll try a little bleach and if that doesn't do anything then I guess I'm trying a different detergent. We do have really hard water here, but have a water softener that's supposed to help. Hmmmm....

HE machines are just a PITA. I don't have any problems using my MIL's, but I have to rinse and rinse with mine.
