flax question

Ok, so my mom had an unopened package of the roasted flax seed from Trader Joe's and she gave it to me. Now, do I need to grind them up in order to use them all the time or can I leave them whole sometimes?? I ate some on my yogurt this morning and they were pretty good. I just left them whole in thiscase. But can I do that??

Re: flax question

you can but you will get more benefit out of them if you grind them up. I don't think our bodies can break them down. I could be wrong though.

Re: flax question

Okay, as a follow up to this - I bought some ground flax seed that was refrigerated. I accidentally left it out of the fridge for about a day. Would it lose effectiveness because of that? Should I toss it and get more, or can I continue to use it?

Re: flax question

Our bodies can't really process whole flax seeds, they need to be ground to really benefit.

And about the flax left out....yes, that does damage the flax oil, but not enough that I'd toss them! They still have plenty of good left in them

I usually buy bulk whole seeds and grind them in my food processor and store them in the freezer - usually only 1-2 cups at a time.

Re: flax question

Wasn't there a cereal called Uncle Sam's that had whole flax seeds in it? It was good for being a laxative, I thought. Nothing on the cereal package said you had to refrigerate it. Maybe I'm not talking about the same thing, here.....................
