Diabetic Breastfeeding?

I was told with my first that I would not be able to breastfeed while on the medicine I am on and was VERY upset.
Then again they told me A LOT of stupid information (I now know this...)

SO. Are there any diabetics or anyone on a diabetic medication that CAN breastfeed? Any suggestions as to what medications may be safe for the baby??

Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Re: Diabetic Breastfeeding?

If you can take it pregnant you should be able to take it breastfeeding. I was on glucophage and insulin while pregnant.

Re: Diabetic Breastfeeding?

I was on glyboride (spl?) with my first and was on Avandia until I found out I was pregnant with this one and will be switching to a new one soon.
So I should be able to breastfeed while taking a medication? Oh and what doctor should I ask, OB or Pediatrician?

PM me. I have resources here to look up specific meds. Give me your med and your dosage. Many women are on glucofage (metformin) but it is used to maintain pregnancy AND lactation for women with PCOS and is safe for b/fing.

Re: Diabetic Breastfeeding?

I was told that not all things you can take while pregnant are reccommended while breastfeeding. You would think they would, but apparently not.

I know that insulin is safe pregnant and breastfeeding.

I'm taking glyburide (while pregnant and now breastfeeding)

I would talk to the doctor that handles your diabetes now, if they tell you that you can't take anything, ask to see a diabetic specialist or something, because there are definitly safe drugs out there, it depends on your needs what you can take.

Re: Diabetic Breastfeeding?

I was on metformin after her 6month b-day.Before that-too nervouse to use since DD was not on solids then.Yeah-Actos,Metformin and insulin while pg-oh not Actos WHEN PG TEST WAS bfp-HAD TO GO ON INSULIN+Metformin.
On plus side my A1C's were always under %6 while breastfeedibg-nursing kept my sugars beautiful! After I weaned her at 12months(only because I get pg with Actos and we wanted to TTC again),I needed the long acting insilin,Metformin as always and Actos again-since goal is under6% for TTC and pregnancy! Goodluck-Metformin is very safe and I PLAN TO USE IT MY WHOLE NEXT PREGNANCY AND NURSING TIME! The next baby gets to self wean as a 2-3yr old though-I miss nursing my LO!

Re: Diabetic Breastfeeding?

I had GD and I was also breastfeeding my older DD while pregnant. You should talk w/ you doctor about what meds are safe while breastfeeding. You shouldn't have to wean b/c of diabetes. I took glyburide and precose while pregnant and breastfeeding. My 1st DD was not nursing very often at the time though, but now she is, go figure! I also would talk w/ my LLL leader b/c she had a book that had which medications are safe and which are not while breastfeeding.
