Re: How long did you bf for? Did your dc self wean?

My mom just went through breast cancer, so she really encouraged me with my twins. They nursed about 18 months . . . I fed them cow's milk around 13-14 months, and they also had juice, water, and table (home-made) baby food. I think the nursing by that time was primarily for comfort?

My son is nursing much less these days - he's 8 months old, but I'm following him for now. Probably plan to wean between 12 and 18 months, for my own sake.

I think there's a WIDE range of normal past a year... DD still nurses lots, usually upon waking in the morning, then before her morning nap, then after her morning nap or just after lunch (depends on timing - sometimes I'm just getting something ready for DS when she wakes up, so she eats lunch before nursing), usually not before her afternoon nap, but normally afterwards (sometimes she isn't interested though) and then before bedtime. So that's 4-5 times a day, but they're all nice long nursing sessions, particularly in the morning and before bed. She no longer nurses at night.

I've heard some people say their one year olds nurse only once or twice day, which doesn't seem like nearly enough to me, unless they're being supplemented somehow (water, milk, etc). DD almost always has free access to a sippy with water, but never drinks more than 2-4oz in a day (usually with lunch and dinner), the rest of her liquid intake comes from me.

Great question Samantha, I was kinda wondering that myself

Thanks for all the great responses everyone

Re: How long did you bf for? Did you dc self wean?

Both my kids from 10 months were getting a sippy with either, juice, Milk, or water in it. My DS nurses 3-6 times at night and 2-4 times in the day. My daughter like I said is maybe a dozen times a month, I think with her it is more of a "Just want to make sure I am still in the pecking order" type of thing.

As for a having a older child when my son was born, I have found it really did make my daughter want to nurse more because the baby was, and i didn't mind the tandem thing.

Re: How long did you bf for? Did your dc self wean?

my dd (21 months) nurses when the sun rises and falls back to sleep then wakes for the day about 8 and nurses/cuddles awhile longer until she gets up, nurses again mid-morning, before nap, then she walks sleepily out of her room after her nap to nurse, again before dinner and then about 7:30 before bed. I think that's about 7 regular times a day. She also wants to nurse every time I sit on the floor like story time at the library, music class, etc.

I had to night wean her because she was waking every 1-2 hours to nurse throughout the night and wanting to stay latched-on a long time and I wasn't getting any sleep. She still wakes sometimes at night to ask for "mama's breast milk please". It's hard to resist but we both really need our sleep.

My family jokes that I will have to go off to college with her.

Re: How long did you bf for? Did your dc self wean?

My first I nursed for 4 mos (had tons of probs and NO help!)
My 2nd for 8 mos (turned into a rabid biter)
My 3rd I pumped for 8 mos (had trouble nursing)
My 4th for 33 mos! I kind of helped him stop, or he'd still be asking for num-num. He was 3 in May.

Re: How long did you bf for? Did your dc self wean?

I ebf dd for 6 months, then she'd have a couple bottles of formula a day (6 ozs tops), but around 112 months she would only nurse at night and a couple times during the day. I went back to work when she was 14 months and by then she was completely weaned. I've learned a little since then, so I won't be giving Ashton formula, but I plan to bf for around the same amount of time. Maybe a little longer. I don't like giving myself a date, we just go with the flo and see how lond we can do it. I plan to getr breast reduction surgery after he's weaned so I'm pretty sure I won't be nursing at 2! My back can't take the boobs!

15 months. I would have LOVED to go longer, but just like previous poster, the sippy cup did us in! He self-weaned.

Re: How long did you bf for? Did your dc self wean?

My son is almost 22 months and is nursing regularly. I am sad to report though that he has night weaned. I thought that I would love this but now I am starting to wish I could go back. (sometime I wake him up in the middle of the night and ask HIM if HE wants to nurse, same thing has happened with the co sleeping bit, he starts out in his bed and I later take him to ours... who couldn't love a snuggly baby?) Anyway, I plan to let him self- wean. I am starting to get comments from family now but the he** with them it is my baby and I will do what I want.

I would find it a HUGE success if he would nurse till at least 3 years. I plan to get preggy and I would really like his 'help' with the new baby and nursing...
