BFing even while smoking is healtier than giving Formula!

I gotta find it but the percent of nicotine (sp?) that goes into your milk is very low (be back with a link)

That said I never have and never will touch a cigg! I think its nasty!

I have a good friend who smokes a lot and she has BFed 2 kids and given birth to 3 kids all while smoking.

Personally, if someone can't give up the smokes, IMO baby is better off getting formula!! I'm a former smoker, but I never smoked after I found out I was pg (haven't smoked in nearly 4 years) and never smoked during BF. Never relished the thought of having my baby addicted to nicotine!
That's actually not true at all. Most doctors -- and Kellymom, if I recall correctly -- will tell you that as long as you smoke less than a pack a day, breastmilk IS better for baby, whether or not you smoke, and baby will not be addicted to nicotine. Smoking while nursing is, of course, not a good habit, but the health benefits of BM far outweigh those of formula, regardless of whether or not mom is a smoker.

Well I guess I'm going to stop while I'm ahead and this turns into a debate.

Mama, I don't think anyone here disagrees even a little with your opinion of the matter that smoking and babies are a sick combo. Its just the part about formula being even one step further down than smoke infested breastmilk that seems to be the dominating fact...so no debates

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Where is all of this vitriol coming from? Please do some reading before making incorrect judgment calls. You may find these links helpful in addition to the links offered by MatildasMum:

http://www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle/smoking.html
http://www.kellymom.com/newman/12more_bf_myths.html#4 (list of BFing myths)

Smoking in the presence of the baby is much more of a concern than smoking while nursing. I do smoke 1 or 2 cigarettes per day, but never in my home, always outside, almost always after my son goes to bed, and I wash my hands and change my shirt afterwards. I remained smoke-free for 2 whole years, and then found out that my boyfriend was cheating on me when my son was about 12 months old. I am trying to quit--but seriously, even my doctor told me to keep BFing.

I take serious offense to your implication that my child would be better off with formula -- not because I feel guilty about smoking (although I do), but because I know the facts and you are making erroneous statements. If you do some reading, you will discover that that is not the case.

There is no debate to be had here... the facts are against you.

I agree with the point being made but I think the "idiot" thing is going a little far. I just think it is rude. Here's this woman trying to make the best decision for her baby and yeah she smokes but here's the thing...it's HER kid, not yours.

BTW I don't smoke and I haven't ever. Like I said I agree that it's not smart to do. But I also think the way it was posted was like you're better than her.

Re: What an idiot - a "I can't believe this person" post

Smoking while BFing is better than formula because if the mom is going to smoke anyway, it's best that her baby is getting the antibodies and nutrients that he/she will need to fight off any particular side affects that may come from being around secondhand smoke. If baby is fed formula, they will likely be sicker beacuse there will be no built-in immunities to the smoke.

So it's not the nicotine in the breastmilk that is the problem. It is the secondhand smoke. Of course anyone who smokes around their baby is a jack*ss, but it also gets passed on on your clothes, your breath, etc.
