the strangest cough

DD woke up yesterday morning with a very harsh, raspy cough. She started running a fever (101.8) last night and is still coughing. But the cough is very strange, it isn't a normal sounding cough, I can't really describe it, but she has also almost completely lost her voice, is sneezing, runny nose (clear though) and pretty wheezy when she breaths. Any ideas?

Re: the strangest cough

This sounds EXACTLY like my dd's cold. No idea, though it doesn't seem to bother her. Her fever went away after 2 days, and she tells me she has "bubbles in her throat". Seems like just a cold tho.

Sounds like the same symptoms my son had when he had croup. It usually happens at night. Can't do much about it though.

With ds it was always worse when he first woke up. Not much to do but treat the symptoms.

Re: the strangest cough

My DS gets croup every year. It sounds so much worst then it is. It is kind of a harsh barking cough. Believe it or not they recommend that I take him out into the cool night air. It seems to help. The first time my DS had croup I rushed him to the ER. It sounded so horrible and we had almost lost him to RSV when he was 6 mo old. After the RSV anything that sounds like he has trouble breathing freaks me out.

Re: the strangest cough

just got her back from the pedi's office, the sound was scaring me too much and she confirmed it, DD has croup. She gave us some steroids since DD was having a hard time breathing and told me to keep the cool mist humidifier on.

Try rubbing Vicks on the bottoms of her feet then putting socks on for bed.
This has been reccomended to me a few times this week, I'm busting to know if it really does relive coughing at night.

Re: the strangest cough

I also read (probably here somewhere) that holding your LO in front of the open freezer door with the cold air blowing out on them is supposed to help the cough of croup as well. Good luck, mama! Hope your LO feels better soon
