Re: Varicella Vaccine- Chicken Pox

Not sure if your child is in private or public school, but in most states you can get a waiver for your child where vaxes aren't required. In some states it is because of "religious" reasons, and some states it can be "philosophical" reasons. Maybe check your state or ask other Cali mammas.

Yes, you can file your own report with VAERS. I did it last year when DS had a reaction to the CP vaccine. NVIC has a link on their website (http://www.909shot.com).

California is the most lenient of states when it comes to waivers. You can basically file for any of 3 reasons: philisophical, medical, and religious. In your case, you can file medical... but I don't know if your doc has to sign off on medical reasons. If you don't want to go through the hassle, you can file philisophical.
My little sister (now 29) has never had any vaccinations and my mom had to file waivers. My mom said it was surprisingly easy. All she had to do was fill something out and that was that. This was back in the early 1980s.

The National Vaccine Information Center has the best website I've been able to find on vaccination info. This page will tell you how to do it:
https://www.nvic.org/state-site/California.htm

Good luck!

sorry DS has to go through this. And sorry you do too!

I just wanted to thank you for this post. I don't want DD to get the CP vaccine and now I have more reason to avoid it. THANK YOU ALL for the info.

I didn't want him to get it because Chicken Pox is not as "deadly" as they like to say. But now with it making him break out in Shingles (yes he does have it, doc said so), it makes me really upset.

What is really bad is he needs to be sent to Infectious Disease spec. The doc said he might be immuno-suppressed because of the Meningitis.

How upsetting! Quick and smooth healing to your LO.
I hope lots of mamas see this and realize that the vax's themselves have risks.

Okay, I just read through the CA exemption requirements here:
http://www.dhs.ca.gov/ps/dcdc/izgroup/pdf/imm488e.pdf

...and it said that to file medical, your physician must write a letter stating why it's a medical reason. But since your DS has shingles and your doc has confirmed it, I'm sure he would approve a medical exemption so he won't have to have any more boosters.
