Re: Is this true?

I know in CA, when I had the boys, DH had to bring the seat up to my room and we had to put DS in it and let them see that the straps and everything were correctly positioned before we could go home. We used buckets with them, so it was no big deal. With DD, in GA, we were ready for the same routine. DH brought the bucket up and they didn't even need to see it. We used it to carry all the extras that wouldn't fit in the diaper bag to the car.

So, if you have to bring it to the room, that could be a huge PITB with a convertable.

Oh no! I can't afford both. I'm going to call the hospital right now.

You only have to have an infant seat, not necessarily a bucket. As long as it is rated for an infant, and is rear-facing, you should be fine!

Re: Is this true?

I would call the hospital, but most that I've heard of just require a carseat to be used. If you tell them that you have a convertible carseat in your vehicle because of space issues, you'll probably have a nurse follow you down to your vehicle when you get it loaded. I'm personally still trying to figure out if I'm going to do an infant seat, or just use a convertible seat myself.

Re: Is this true?

I just called and talked to the security officers and he said that you DO have to have the infant bucket seat to leave the hospital. He said that you have to be able to bring it up to the room and buckle the baby in it and then snap it into the base in the car in front of the nurse. What am I going to do? I can't fit a seat that wide in my car with the other two kids in car seats too and I can't afford both! I was SURE that buying 2-3 radians would simplify the issue so that I didn't need a new car. I'm a single mama supporting my kids on a waitress's salary! I dont' know hwo to fix this!

That seems silly.... could you maybe "borrow" one from someone just for the ride home and will your other dd's be in the car for the ride home? or could they be with someone? It would be a pain to take out the other ones just to put in the infant carrier though.... I'm in Massachusetts... not sure how far away you are but I'ld let you borrow my Graco snugride (07 model NEVER in an accident and only used 6months by my moose of a 7m old )

Re: Is this true?

There is no reason you should HAVE to get an infant car seat. I would try and call your local safe kids coalition and see if they can talk to the hospital or decipher the hospitals rules for you. There is no law anywhere that says babies have to be in infant seats, only REAR facing ones. The hospital is probably just ignorant on the fact that infants can be just as safe in a convertible seat.

We plan to use a Radian from birth too and nothing will change that.

I think you could have a nurse or someone else from the hospital come down to yur car and check that you have the baby in properly

Did some one say earlier you were in Rhode Island? If so here is a link with contacts

http://www.risp.state.ri.us/safekids/

If not just google "safe kids + your state" and you will get results.
