DD Has Excema! Any remedies?

My 3 mo. old has excema patches all over her tummy, her elbows, and behind her ears. The doc told me to use Aveeno fragrance free lotion, but is there anything else that works? My husband has the same thing, which I understand is genetic....darn those genes!

Re: DD Has Excema! Any remedies?

A lot of it can have to do with diet (or yours if you're nursing). Cut our dairy, peanut butter, wheat, and sugars. Those are the big triggers. My husband also breaks out terribly with vitamin C. ETA: With some people diet has nothing to do with it, but those can definitely trigger it in some, so it's good to at least cut dairy most of the time if you're nursing.

Use Cetaphil soap and lotion. Also, Gentle Naturals has a Baby Eczema Cream that really helped the little boy I watched. I had to apply it 4 times a day though. When he woke up, right before nap, after nap (or at the beginning of her second nap since she likely is still doing two), and before bed.

Only use Free & Clear detergents and softeners.

We don't vaccinate, we kept our sons intact, we use cloth diapers, we co-sleep, we extended RF, we breastfeed, but we watch too much tv and I totally dig plastic! Everyone has their issues, lol.

aveeno never worked for us...

only cetaphyl cream.

cetaphyl is also the only soap she hasnt gotten hve using (except for blue house soaps "baby bear")

we have cut baths back to 3 times a week (thats up from the two she used to have...) and use hydro cream for severe breakouts.

hope she starts feeling better mama

Yes, I am nursing her and I hate to think of cutting out those foods...I love my cheese and I love my peanut butter! Maybe I should try it for a week though. I'll definitely try Cetaphil, since it sounds gentle enough. Thanks for the tips!

Re: DD Has Excema! Any remedies?

I did the whole elimination diet with ds when he was an infant and it didn't really seem to make too much difference.

But what I swear has worked wonders is probiotics like the healthy bacteria in yogurt!
When he was only breastfed our naturopath recommended buying the Udo's infant probiotics and putting a bit on my nipples before I breastfed and it seemed to work really well.
Now that he's 21 months and eats food, I make sure to feed him yogurt every day and his skin has been great

Re: DD Has Excema! Any remedies?

My DS has severe food allergies. He had that bad.. all over him. He also had red, raw places around his mouth and bottom all the time. He was finally treated.. we took him to a pediatric GI specialist. He was switched to a formula from England and put on meds. After we got that fixed.. his red, raw rashes and patches went away. We tried the creams, etc, but until we fixed his diet.. nothing worked. He would only get "outbreaks" when we would introduce solid foods that he was allergic to. We now have his diet perfect and he hasn't had any more outbreaks.

If your DH has it too, it sounds like allergies run in your family. I would definitely check it out.

Good Luck!

I second the probatics and elimination diet. I did the ED with our behaviour issuses and that was not the problem but it is amazing what little ones can be so sensitive to. Dairy, soy, wheat and nuts are big triggers. Also honey or castor oil TOPICALLY can do wonders. We use California Baby soap ( you can get it at Target now). It is soooo pure and the scents are yummmmmmy!!

For my DD we use Dr Bronner's baby mild soap and for moisturizer..either jojoba oil, sweet almond oil or coconut oil.
She hasn't had any problems in a few months...

We do a warm bath every night, but soap only every-other night. While she's still sitting in the warm water, we slather her up with Vaseline, because it seals the water into the skin and no one has ever been allergic or had a reaction to it.
