is Dreft or Ivory *really* neccessary ?

Im questioning whether its really neccessary to wash all of babies things in dreft or ivory. i am seriously doubting the hospital uses either when they wash baby clothes and linens , or do they ?

and , co sleeping like I have done , its not like I have washed my sheets in either.....

what are your thoughts ???

IMO, no - their marketing folks have done a great job though convincing people that "delicate skin" needs a special detergent. Perhaps years ago when you had very few choices for detergents and they were very harsh, perhaps there was a real need for them. Nowadays you can buy "free & clear" detergents that should do just fine. My dad used to need his work dress shirts washed ONLY in Dreft or else he would get a rash around his neck - my stepmom was bemoaning the fact that she had to wash his shirts separately, or else use Dreft on everything (she didn't think it was getting everything clean enough), so I suggested she try Purex F&C (which is what I use on dipes) - she did and didn't tell him....and no rash.

No, I've never used it. I prefer to use a natural/gentle detergent for ALL of our laundry, not just babies, but even before I started using this, I used to use Arm & Hammer or All or Tide for all of my family's laundry and my babies never had a problem with it. Some babies are very sensitive, though, so maybe just wait and see.

I never use(d) anything special when washing their clothes. I figured if they got a rash then I would change it then and luckily they never have. BUT I don't put dryer sheets in with their clothes, only mine and other laundry items. I think the perfume in the sheets would be a bit much for the little ones.

Hubby and I were just talking about this as its time to get ds's teeny clothes out to sort and wash. Ds and the new babe will have their dipes washed in tide and ds co-slept with us on sheets washed in tide. If dipes are going to be up against the most sensitive part of my newborn and they are washed in tide I don't see why I would need to wash the clothes in dreft.

For the record we did wash ds's clothes in dreft for the first few months. Didn't see any difference when we switched to regular detergent.

I don't think so, I think its just made with less harsh chem than other soaps..I personally am allergic to dreft so I don't use and my kids are cool with All fre and clear since birth basically

Nope, not for us. Used Tide F&C the first couple of months, but didn't think it was doing a good job. Switched to regular Tide with no problems.

Nope. I used dreft with my first 3, because I didn't know any better. With my fourth I just used the F&C that I used on our other laundry with no problems.

No, and I am sure the hospitals use some nasty stuff to sanitize everything you put on the baby. I do really like the smell of dreft though.
