Re: is Dreft or Ivory *really* neccessary ?

My mom did because she loved the smell, but honestly it caused my babies to break out and it NEVER cleaned the clothes. I have projectile vomiters and lots & lots of spit up, so that was a concern for me. We always used regular Tide and doubled rinsed. {Or whatever detergent that you use}. I would just double rinse incase they are too perfumey, etc. I just always did anyway.

I was always given those at babyshowers but honestly NEVER used them because they just aren't good detergents for cleaning so I thought it was a waste.

I never did. Regular detergent works just fine. If it turns out baby has skin sensitivity issues, then you can consider alternatives, but otherwise, good ol' Tide is fine.

I don't think so. My children have sensitive skin, but just use 7th generation f&c with no problems.

We used/use Purex Free and Clear on all our laundry and loved on the cloth diaper laundry!

Charlotte -----Yeah the ads for Dreft really can pull you in and you end up feeling like it;s best on baby cloths! Lol---I hated the overly strong scent and did'nt think it cleaned well either.

We fell for it first baby, next time I didn't bother. He had super sensitive skin even and was fine. I use a small amount of detergent and always do an extra rinse anyhow though.

my thoughts are you should get a detg. for you and your kids clothes that is free of perfumes, dyes, and that is more natural otherwise you risk causing irritations.
I use Trader Joes Next to Godliness and borax

just look at the ingredients.

Re: is Dreft or Ivory *really* neccessary ?

We used the baby brand detergents for the first couple of weeks, and they were actually harsher on dd that when we switched to all free & clear - dreft and the like have so much perfume and softener in it that it irritated dd's skin and gave me a headache. I'd totally skip it. All f&c and purex f&c have been great for us - we can wash everything in it, including the diapers.

I'm just going to use Country Save which is gentle and safe for sensitive skin. Same thing I use on the diapers
