Would you switch OB just to homebirth?

I LOVE my OB though HATE the hospital that he delivers at. Not hospital choices where I live. I just found a midwife that is in the next State (mind you 15 minutes from home). I'm debating whether to switch..Would you? (BTW, my "hospital is 45 minutes away)

I switched to a midwife (at 37 weeks) for the same reason, pretty much.

Unless your OB is going to come to your homebirth, I'd go to the midwife.

Re: Would you switch OB just to homebirth?

yeah i wouldn't switch to a midwife just because you're doing a homebirth-- there's no reason not to use an ob imo-- as long as he's willing to attend of course! but i do feel you need SOMEONE there, so of course if he won't/can't attend the birth, you'll need to find someone who will. but i don't think it HAS to be a midwife!

Absolutely, if the midwife comes highly recommended. Ask for references!

My doctor told me as long as I had no pregnancy complications there was no difference in midwives and ob's as long as you had a qualified midwife and a hospital nearby that would be a back up plan in case of emergency. That was from my DOCTOR mind you!! Which Shocked me to no end!! I am all for homebirthing wish I could have had one.... maybe with the next baby

Re: Would you switch OB just to homebirth?

I think it would make all the difference in the world to give birth someplace where you're comfortable. I did NOT get my choice in hossies when I had DD and my hossy experience was pretty crappy... well, normal for a hossy I guess, but there was another hossy in the area that all my friends got to go to and it had a stinkin awesome labor/delivery... hot tubs in every room, every room had a HUGE suite with bed for the dad, private fridge, pretty decor, the works. It would be hard to switch after someone has watched your pregnancy so far, but when it comes to it, it's not a great chance to have your doctor deliver the baby these days... hardly any doctors are on call more than a couple nights a week. That's my !

I say switch, but only after talking to the midwife. Make sure you like her and are comfortable with her first. If you like her, than I say switch!
