Re: Did you get bloodwork done to confirm your pregnancy?

I called my OB's office as soon as I knew I was pregnant. They said that theyd didn't see anyone until 12 weeks because this way, if you were going to miscarry it was going to happen already or you would be pretty sure to remain pregnant. They only drew blood to check for pregnancy on my first visit. If you have problems staying pregnant I would call and ask to directly speak to your doc. Nurses don't know all the ins and outs all the time.

I also, as Kristi said, would be worried about a cascade of tests and interventions if YOUR dates don't match THEIR dates - a whole waste of time and worry, IMO.
You do normally have a pregnancy panel drawn in your 1st trimester to get baseline levels of EVERYTHING. Not just hcg.

One is usually done at your first prenatal visit. The first set of bloodwork is to check blood count (CBC), check iron levels, assess for STDs, and to check for exposure to illnesses such as chickenpox or measles.
Hormone levels would not be important unless you were having a possible miscarriage or other problems, and there's no testing for hormone levels after first trimester because your HcG levels taper off then anyway.

Re: Did you get bloodwork done to confirm your pregnancy?

i did but the military requires you get it done. tricare won't give you the referral to a MW or OB till then. they offer pg test at the lab all day so you just walk in and get the bloodwork done without even bothering with an at home test (its free at the clinic VS the money to buy OTC tests) as soon as the pg is confirmed you get the bloodwork tests done that come after they sure you are pg. my midwife wanted it done (so did every other MW and OB in town) and she saw at eight weeks (she said she would have loved to see me at 6 but i didn't live there yet) so i dunno...i think it depends on your OB or MW. maybe you should find a new doctor to do it or go to the health clinics in town like a pp said if you really want it done.

Re: Did you get bloodwork done to confirm your pregnancy?

I guess I was just surprised since it had changed so much in the last 1 1/2 years. With my son I went in, had bloodwork done, they did a dating u/s since I was off on my dates (we weren't ATTC) and I was already 5-6 weeks when I went in. They did a 2nd US to confirm and THEN referred me to my OBGYN.

I wasn't asking for a complete panel or anything; I'm not really into TONS of bloodwork and over testing. I was just put off by the attitude maybe? I mean, I had a back injury a few years ago and needed to see a specialist, and my primary care Dr (not nurse) fit me right in and it was them who did the xrays and MRI before I was referred out. Same Dr. I know pregnancy isn't an illness - it just kind of bummed me out and confirmed that I need to find someone who has the time for me. It wasn't even the nurse who called me or who I spoke to, it was the receptionist. Did they ask WHY I was concerned? No... I know ever pregnant mom is worried and for the most part it's out of out hands at this early point in time, but to maybe call me back and spend 3 minutes talking to me wouldn't have been asking too much.

I just felt so RUSHED with my DS through every single prenatal visit. And it went downhill from there (horrifying delivery). I still have a bad taste in my mouth. On a good note, I'm going to the Birth Center in town for a tour Wednesday night. They have midwives on staff and it's a really nice brownstone right in downtown Portland.

That's a good idea. I *might* have a few left. I used a whole bunch in the last month or two or three from the coop. I'm going to scrounge my "diagnostic" drawer in the bathroom. I know I have a whole bunch of OPKs left - those work too.

Thanks for your opinions - I appreciate the input!

Re: Did you get bloodwork done to confirm your pregnancy?

It hasn't been my experience that I would automatically get a blood draw to "prove" pregnancy. They do a pee test. If you have had history of m/c, stillborn, etc then I think they do that to make sure you aren't going to m/c and to see what plan of treatment they will be using. {That is what happened to me with this pregnancy}. I have never had a blood pregnancy test with any other pregnancy unless I asked for it to see if I was pregnant. So for a healthy women and pregnancy, it isn't needed and probably insurance won't cover it since you can pee on a stick and get cheaper results you know? If you have a history of m/c or stillborns, or need meds at the start of pregnancy then that is usually the reasons.

HTHs!

Re: Did you get bloodwork done to confirm your pregnancy?

I probably shouldn't suggest this but if you really want to have bloodwork done, call your OB and tell them you are BF and you don't remember when your last period was. They have you do bloodwork and then send you for an u/s to get a due date. My sister had to do it since she was skipping periods like crazy when BFing.

I called yesterday and they don't do 8 week bloodwork at my OB either..Though I do get a u/s since we have to know 100% with me when I'm due. I pushed it for the Monday after Thanksgiving since I want to "see" something. I am getting bloodwork done via my primary next Monday but that's only because I'm passing out already and it's either low iron or screwed up thyroid. (I convinced him to do all pg bloodwork too)

Re: Did you get bloodwork done to confirm your pregnancy?

Are you military? That sounds like how base is here. Before you can be seen by an OB or MW you have to get the blood test on base. ( Because we don't have OB care on base, thank GOD! A man in BTU's down there is just creeepy to me!!) Once it is confirmed with the blood test they give you the referl and you talk to that refered provider from then on out. Family practice won't even see me for ANYTHING as long as I am preggers.

Re: Did you get bloodwork done to confirm your pregnancy?

Just request it. While they may not typically do it they will if requested. Be firm. I found out last Thursday I was preggers and my general doc usually doesn't do anything, I just go to the OB. Well, I want my numbers since my last pregnancy didn't progress. Seen my PCP yesterday morning then had the bloodwork drawn. She said she'd call me with #'s and send the results to the OB. So, once I get the numbers ~ tomorrow ~ I'll make an appt with the OB. My OB doesn't see people until 8-11 weeks but the maternity nurse does a full workup before that, usually at 6-8 weeks. Because I had a high risk pregnancy and my hubby has spina bifida and cleft lip/palate I get started on prenatals, folic acid, and iron right away and they do an early on ultrasound to start tracking growth (I had a baby stop growing 3 times). I started all my pills the day I got the positive.

Just insist, they just gave you the "basic" answer I am sure.
