I agree with the pp, if your baby doesn't start wetting more diapers, your baby is dehydrated! Watch for decreased level of activity, unable to console, irritability, decreased appetite, inability to wake the baby up, is the soft spot indented. Those are all signs of severe dehydration and your baby needs some fluids. They say a minimum of 6 wet diapers a day. What about a cooling center? Church or a gymnasium to go to? What about a family member or neighbor. Call the Red Cross in your area to find someplace cool to go to. I hope it cools off for you, we are expecting highs around 100 degrees all week with heat indexes of over 110-115.

I do know people can die from heat..they can get very ill from being too hot. I think if you don't have any AC and no breeze that you need to maybe keep them in a swimming pool or cool bath most of the time. If nothing else you can take them to McDonalds or some other place that has a play area that is inside. With the heat wave that is effecting everyone I wouldn't want to mess with it.. Also, you can buy a single small AC window unit for less that $100...you could then just box yourselves in one room during the hot part of the day. We had to do that last year. It was no fun but it was way better than being so hot.

Where do you get one that cheap? The cheapest I've found anywhere around here is $200

OP, everything I've read curently says that if they have less then 4 wet diapers a day, you need to contact your doctor immediately. If he's had *no* wet diapers today still, I'd get to the ER pronto. This isn't something to mess around with at all as if it goes too far before being treated they may have permanent organ damage.

You can get used window air-conditioning units from thrift stores and used appliance stores. We don't have air here and it's been in the 90's for the past couple of weeks. I have dark curtains in the living room and dining room and I keep them shut on whichever side the sun is coming in. I have a stand up fan in the dining room and a table fan in the living room on my computer desk. In my daughter's room (which faces the afternoon sun) I have foil over the windows to keep it cool in there. She only wears a dipe in the house and on really hot days, I fill the tub with cool water and let her play in there however long she wants. If your child drinks juice, mix some with some water and let it sit in the freezer for awhile. It becomes slushy like and my daughter just freaks out over it.

sorry, when i voted, I thought you were talking about sick, like with a virus or something...like my mom says being cold can give you a cold, etc...oops!

The heat has been deadly this summer, I would follow the pp advice and try to find a cooling center somewhere - heck, I'd spend the day at the mall or the library if I didn't have air, but it is hot as hades from April until October here!

Re: Can having no AC it hot weather make kids sick?

just another thought my Ped has always told me to get them in the bath as much as possible because people can absorb water through the skin. Set up a kiddie pool in the yard under a tree and let them play or put them in a cool bath and let them be. Kids will drink the bath and pool water as well, so it will get liquid in them. But skin will absorb water and can help fend off dehydration.

Lowes. I got one there for $89 and one for $93. The big one we have cost just a little over $200 and that was from Sams. Check Home Depot too...Walmart sometimes has small cheap ones. When I say small I mean, like big enough for one or two rooms...not big enough for more than that. Our $93 one is 6200 BTU's and is Sharp brand. Our big one is 12000BTU's and is GE.

Re: Can having no AC it hot weather make kids sick?

i said yes. ds gets over heated so easily in the summer. throwing up, lathargic, cranky, stuffy nose, rashes. at first i thought he was just getting sick, but then i realized it was cause of the heat. so now we have to make sure hes in cool weather all the time and he rarely sees outside time if its over 90.

i would definately invest in ac. they sell them at walmart for less than a hundred.

woops I voted wrong, I voted no but meant yes.....Heat can make ppl sick, but if you keep them hyderated and cool (fans, playing in water, etc) they aer better off...LOTS of ppl live without Ac, just keep them drinking pleanty of water,etc.. and put them in a pool/sprinkeler or even the tub in cool water to play. If you lived close to me I would have no problem inviting you over mama.
