Prefolds alone??

Again, I am brand new to CD so if this sounds silly that's why. :0)

Can you put just a prefold on during the day or do you need a cover or some kind of an insert?

Is it a lot cheaper to go with prefolds then say pockets?

I am trying to build up a good stash for our 6month old boy without spending a ton.

Thanks so much for your help. You guys are just awesome over here. :0) Heidi

You can pin or snappi a prefold and go coverless around the house. I do that with my ds all the time. You would want a cover for going out though. You use a 'doubler' for more absorbency when you need it (naps, night, long trips). A lot of people just use the next prefold size down tri-folded inside the bigger prefold. There are some great posts in red at the top that will give you pictures and more links.

ETA: yes, prefolds are generally less expensive. You can get a baker's dozen at www.keenbambino.com for the price of 1 pocket. Most of mine are from there, but I also have a few brown edge and 1 yellow edge from www.greenmountaindiapers.com They are cut wider and shorter which makes for a nice fit, but shipping is steep. She also has some great illustrations.

Re: Prefolds alone??

If your house is warm enough to go without pants, and don't mind a damp lap once in a while, you don't need covers, no. I usually use a bigger sized PF under him when I put him in a bouncy seat or something, just so if it gets a bit damp, I don't have to figure out how to wash it.

Babylegs are great for this. Fast, easy, frequent changes are great!

You can buy almost a dozen PF for the cost of one FB if you get them from the right place, so yes, it's a LOT cheaper. Check little lions I think for cheap PFs and Nickis for cheap covers with free shipping.

But, if you have the money, seriously look at the prefolds from green mountain diaper, they're da bomb! hehehe

Prefolds are going to be way cheaper than pockets. On average pockets are $15 each and prefolds are about $2 each. Big difference. And even when your child outgrows them, you can still use them for doublers and stuff.

DD has been going coverless lately with just a snappied prefold with a doubler. Without a doubler I'd be changing her every half hour and with as much as she hates diaper changes I can't do that. If your a sewer you can easily modify your prefolds to make them more absorbant. Some of ours I added a strip of burley knit terry and a decorative panel down the middle and they last her alot longer.

When we go out, I either put a pocket on her or top her prefold off with a cover.

Could you use an empty pocket over a prefold? That way you would have the waterproof outer layer of the pocket. Just curious.

You could, but you might as well just stuff the prefold into the pocket. Lots of people (raising my hand) use prefolds to stuff pockets.

But if you stuff it, you need to wash a dozen pockets a day, I only wash, on average, two covers a day.

So what covers do you like the best over your PF's?

Thirsties are my first choice, but be warned, they run big. My 4 1/2 mo 10 lb still wears the XS with the tabs crossed over (14" waist)

BSWWs are my second choice.
