Re: Flu shot
I'll be the oddball...I got my flu shot a week ago. My boys got theirs earlier this week.
I've had the flu before, and it knocks me out for a week. I've not had it since I starting getting an annual flu shot (although I do know I could get it as a pp said), and I need to be able to function. I know many won't agree with me, but I am comfortable with my decision.

Re: Flu shot
I got mine on Wednesday and feel ok other than my arm being sore.
Even if it protects me from a few strains, it's worth it. I have two little ones and can't afford to potentially get it. I appreciate everyones' ability to make their own decisions. Jen

My kids had their's yesterday. My dh and I will get one once we can find out where they are giving them. We requested and received the preservative/mercury free ones. You might want to read the Vaccine Book by Dr. Sears. Just from what I read he gives you all sides to the picture. He doesn't say vaccinate or not. He gives you facts. It's very informative. Actually I wasn't really planning on getting all of my kids the flu shot but after reading his section on it I decided to. I had the flu shot when I was pregnant and never had any trouble with it. You could ask you dr. about getting the preservative free one.

Re: Flu shot
When I was in the military, I got the flu shot twice and got deathly ill both times. After that, I got a chit saying I was exempt. Last year I did come down with the flu. I was feeling fine one morning and while in Walmart I started feeling a little woozy. Then I passed out. I drove to my mom's house and had dh pick me up there and take me to the doc. They said I had the flu. My mom kept the boys that night and by the next day I was well enough to take care of them again. Not 100% but not on my deathbed either. No one else in the house caught it either even though at that time James was nursing and DJ was cosleeping with me! I remember the year DJ was born going into his 6 month well-baby checkup and the ped talking to me about all the cases of flu they'd had this week. I asked her weren't most of those kids vaxed for it and she said yes, every kid they'd seen with the flu so far that year had been vaxed. She explained that they vax for the strain they think is going to be the biggy but if they guess wrong...oh well. And of course there's the same line that they use with CP: "even if you get it, it will likely be a milder case". No thanks! Funny, even after having that conversation about how many vaxed kids were still getting the flu that year, she still wanted me to get the shot for DJ
I stood my ground and he had no problems. None of us will be getting the shot this year. My mom insists on getting it every year (and still winds up with the flu almost every year!) but she's older and has a compromised immune system and serious health problems anyway so I guess she has to make the decision that's right for her.

Re: Flu shot
My husband gets it at work, but I don't, and neither do the kids. The flu shot contains thimerosol (sp?) still- which contains or is a form of mercury. That seems like it would be particularly concerning if you're pregnant...

Re: Flu shot
I don't bother because it is one of the least effective shots. I DO vax my kids though. I got the flu when dd was 5 days old and it was TERRIBLE. I was bed ridden with a new baby and another child to take care of. DH had to be gone for work for a few weeks. My mom came and helped me and she had her shot and didn't get the flu from me. My son and I got it, but because I was nursing, dd did not (thankfully). I wouldn't have done it differently though since I wouldn't get the flu shot when pg (or now either). But I was thankful my mom didn't get sick! Who knows if the shot helped or not!!
Totally your decision. I imagine you understand that this site has a lot of women on here who are totally against vaccinations, period. You won't get a very broad spectrum of opinions. Your decision is your own and good luck with it! To me, vaccinations is one of the hardest decisions to make. No flaming, ladies, please. FW

Re: Flu shot
We delay vaxing but I don't feel the flu shot is safe for my family for various reasons.

Re: Flu shot
I have previously worked in healthcare, so almost alwys get the flu shot.
The one year I did not get a shot, due to the shortage of vaccine, I contracted Inluenza A, and had to be quarrantined to my home, and my family on preventive meds so they would not contract it. I will most likely always get the flu vaccine. Especially after experiencing influenza A.
