Question Can you freeze bananas?

Has anyone tried to freeze mashed bananas? I bought alot of reduced organic ones from the store and was wondering if they could be frozen in a baggie or something like that. Thanks..

Re: Can you freeze bananas?

You can actually freeze them right in their skins, if you want to. They do turn to total mush in the freezer, though. At which point, they're suitable only for baby food or banana bread.

Yes you can peel them and put them ziploc bags, they might turn brown. But they are great in smoothies. Milk and Bannas is a favorite here.

Re: Can you freeze bananas?

Yuppers. I just put some in tonight. Whenever ours start to "go" we just put them in the freezer as to not waste them. I either do it right in their skins, or I peel them, dip them in yogurt & freeze them (like a popsicle). I'll usually stick a wooden stick in there & maybe roll them in nuts or something if I do that. Makes a great desert!

Thanks for the ideas! I am planning on just using this batch for banana bread. Have any of you tried to put in some powdered vit c to keep it from browning Or maybe put a little pineapple juice in it for the browning? Anyway after this batch I will definately try some of your other ideas!!!! Thanks.

IMO, they're going to turn brown just because that's what they do when you mash them. Doesn't change the taste, so I've never bothered with anything to try and prevent the browning. I found that it's a really good to label them if you mash them though, because they just look like some kind of unidentifiable science experiment if you don't.

Re: Can you freeze bananas?

I always peel and freeze our over-ripe bananas in a ziploc bag. I wouldn't want to just eat it because it's pretty mushy, but it is great for banana bread or smoothies as others have mentioned!

ditto on the freeze in skins. I can't have milk, so when I want a "milkshake" I use frozen banana instead of icecream. Also use it in smoothies. My fav right now is frozen banana, avocado and coconut milk.
