My son is going to be 5 months tomorrow but on his birthday he'll definitly be offered cake. I agree, the baby usually doesn't actually eat much of it.

My DS didn't have any sweets (cake, cookies, or candy) until he had his first birthday cake. Like others said it is one day and try not to worry about it. It isn't like your LO gets it all the time. It is okay to have sweets far and few between. He mostly played in it and had a few bites and that was about it.

Yup. My oldest wouldn't touch his and my youngest picked at it. I've seen babies smothered in it. LOL!

About the food coloring, we had a cake from BJ's at Lucas' second b-day party. His poop was neon blue the next day. Seriously, the same color going out that it was going in. I'm more cautious about the cakes I buy and prefer to make them myself.

Well her party's Saturday.
I'm making her an applesauce cake cupcake with coolwhip frosting. So yes, there will be some sugar, but not like what I"m making for the rest of us

I let my dd have a cupcake and she hated it! My son, on the other hand, tore it up!

Yep she did more smooshing than eating. And sugar free (if using artificial sweeteners) is worse in my opinion.

For her second she got her own cupcake (with frosting)

For her third she got a few small 1"x1" squares of cake over the course of a few days.

My daughter's first experience with cake or even something sweet for that matter was her first birthday. I figured why not - let her have some cake on her b-day. We are pretty strick about sugar and sweets every other day. I made one small cake just for her so she could do whatever she wanted to and then an identical bigger cake for everyone else.
